Currently, I have 2 Kaption SPL 10s and an Amp hooked up to my factory head unit. When I have the volume very loud, it gets distorted as you may assume.

How much different would the sound be if I added another amp solely for the stock speakers?

passive X-overs can be very inexpensive . Distrortion from will most liely come from the full spectrum of bass fequwncies ? Tried bringing the bass volume down all the way ?

Obviously with a decnd external amp with would be night and day comapred to factory unit outputs but maybe the cheap fix with the x-overs will work for you .

Also you have special crystaline converter of whatever they are called for your RCA's or are you running speaker level to our subs amp ?

Anyways , people from this board will have you " booming " in no time .

KM, are we running into each other just about everywhere now !!!! WTF How are those BBS wheels on the Audi ?!?!?!? Very nice score.

What's getting distorted, the factory speakers running off the factory deck............ or the sub??

Naw the subs sound awesome, better than some of my friends who have aftermarket decks, its the speakers that distort

Could I make use of a cross over to solve my problem?

If the problem was not there before adding the sub, and assuming you are tapping into a set of speaker leads to go into the amp, it may be the converter in the amp that is overloading the deck's outputs and/or sucking power away from the speakers.

Where are you getting your signal from the OEM system, at the rear speakers (speaker level) or from between the deck and factory amp (possibly "low level" or balanced) if so equipped? Did you "tap" the signal (y-connect) or cut and divert it?

(I've just completed a similar install in my BMW E46 so I may be able to help...)
