There are a lot of great component sets out there, even beyond the list you have mentioned. I would suggest you check out your local dealers and see what they have to offer. Find a reputable dealer that can give you solid customer support as well.

The bimmer is my "new" car actually. I've done installs in about 4 cars over the years, complete with head unit, amps, subs, etc. I never run anything off of the head unit, I always use amp power. As for the car, I think I can get decent sound with mounting 5 1/4" in the stock kick panel location with tweeters mounted just above these, aimed carefully of course. The rear shelf takes 6 1/2", should I do rear fill or coaxials there? I was thinking of cutting a big hole for a port from the trunk for the subwoofer. Otherwise the bass has no way to get into the cabin? What do you guys think?

When I was checking out the JL VR-series components I also listened to the Memphis Multi-Sync's. Both sets are quite comparable in sound with the JL's having a slight edge on the smoothness.

I bought the Memphis's anyways, mostly because of the $150 price difference

An advantage with the Multi-Sync's too is that the tweeter can be mounted coaxially, but unlike the ID Chameleons the tweeter actually is inset inside the dustcap.

I'd go with coaxials in the rear deck too, so your passengers can have music too.

I've never mounted my chameleons as coaxials, but I must say that I like the design of the multi-sync cones better. It kinda stinks having the voice coils exposed while the woofer is moving.

I'm all against rear fill but I don't have many rear seat passengers either. It's up to you.
I would spend the money on the components up front and maybe use a three way comp set with some 6.5's in the door if you can as you may find it lacking midbass up front with only a 5 1/4 up there.

Jl's are a good choice, the make a great product, the VR's are a great start, you should be happy with them. XR's are better, but you see it in the price difference.

Yeah, the XRs are very nice(as are the VRs). A few days ago, Manville Smith of JL mentioned that JL is releasing a new line of premium components. I am interested to see what they are like.
