Hi. I wanted to place a second battery in my car due to the audio system. People advised me not to buy a larger capacitor (I already have one farad) but add anothet battery. I have heard that batteries can "drain each-other" when the car is not working, and the safest thing to do is to disconnect them when the car is off. Now I like that idea since I can listen to music when the car is off, and wont have to worry about not being able to start the car when the battery dies. Now I have few questions about this project:

I have a manual relay but I will prefer something that can be turned on "remotely" with a current - like a starter solenoid. My question is, can I use a 12V starter solenoid for this application? I am not sure if this type of solenoids can be used with current passing through them for longer periods of time.

The system I have will be using 500Amp max (connected to the secondary battery) so I am not sure how much current will be going through the connection between the front battery and the second battery placed in the trunk. So my next question is - does the solenoid/relay have to be rated for the 500amps or less?

The cable I have right now that will be connecting two batteries is fused - do I need to keep this fuse? or is it useless after I add another battery?

I cant help ya as far as any the relay crap and what ever, I have ran a second battery for a while though! i linked my front battery to my rear battery direct runs. I fused about 2 foot off front battery then ran runs back. I have 4 runs 1/0 battery to battery, then my sub amp is run off back battery and 4channel ran from front as I already had wiring in place! I rarely have my music going when car is off, and there should be no way if your car IS running your batteries should drain each other as they are connected into the electrical system so they charge with alt!... I got nothin else for ya sry:/

just run power from the front to the back then run your wire off the battery all a solonoid does is cause resistance i was loosing a db and a half just from using a solonid

Jl 500- using about 80amps, 4chanel amp- 90amp fusing in it (220rms a side), old visonik(60amps fusing- 800rms- way overrated since is putting out less then jl. Later on I want to replace the 500/1 with 1000/1 and use the 500/1 in place of visonik crap. So now I'm pulling 230amps at most- later on ( with 1000/1) it probably be close to 300. So I won't bother with solenoid then- thanks for advice. How many runs you guys think I need fir connecting the two batteries- I drive a civic so it's about 10 ft distance and everything us run from the rear battery. Again thanks for advice- sorry for spelling I'm on my phone

to be honest if your only running 1000 watts max i personally dont think you even need the second battery id suggest just running one battery and see how your voltage is at if anything all u need is a 1 farad cap at the most

Uhm... Where did you get a 1000w?? My 4ch itself puts out 800... Then jl 500/1 gives 600... And visonik about 500... That's almost 2000w rms... Then later on I'm upgrading to 1000/1 so It will be 2500watts... Beside running my jl with the 4ch itself is almost stalling my car- i know I need a alt- but battery is a must.

Ps. I said in the first post I have the cap and is not enough. No offence but nothing is worst than not reading a post and spamming about something totally different since even my original question was how to correctly hook up a second battery and not if I need one.

2k isnt much at still a cap would probably work and be alot cheaper

I have the cap... Nature of the cap is to protect the system from short current drain - with longer bass lines / sweeps doesn't do much... I'm listening to rap and techno so cap helps but the lights still dimm and sometimes car chockes when idling - when longer bass lune comes in... I was advised by numerous people to get a second battery and since I cam get a new one with warranty for $35 is a wy cheaper solution then let's say additional cap... Or 10 of them...

yes it is a way cheaper solution but its typically for bigger systems such as 10000 watts or systems thats have voltage over atleast 14 volts what battery do u have under the hood
