Installing new stereo in 02 Sunfire
Hey, I just bought this car used last week and I want a new stereo that I can play my IPOD off of. Just replacing the stereo right now, nothing spectacular but I first have a few questions.
Before I start asking questions though I went to future shop the other day because they advertise a free installation on all decks over $130 or something so I chose a stereo and they told me that it was a free installation but they had to charge $150 extra to install some new bracket thing because the factory one wont fit. I'm just wondering if that is worth it or if it is better just to go and do it myself.
Ive looked at the diagrams on http://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs/GM/PDF/460025.pdf
and although this is for a 95-99 sunfire will the wiring be the same for the most part?
I'm also wondering if I need to disable the theftlock system on the factory deck before starting to install the new one
And lastly, I've heard that I need a few extra parts for installing a deck: an antenna adapter (don't quite know the real name of the part but the GM antenna cable is to big or something so it needs an adapter I heard), a wire harness, and the bracket thing(is this a "dash installation kit"?). Am I missing anything? and can these things be picked up at a store like Canadian Tire or something?
Thanks and sorry for the long list of questions I'm new to this

The "bracket" they want to give you to you is a waste. its is just there to retain factory chime through your speaker. You know the annoying beaping when youre door/s are open. Also they say it keeps your factory electronics working correctly. BS, ive done many gm's 00-04 and havent had a problem just putting in a regular harness from a 96-04 gm harness, you can get them at crappy tire for 14 bucks. If you want to keep youre chime which some people have done, use the interface or bracket as you called it. But save yourself the 130 bucks and buy something worth it. When installing it you need an antenna adapter 8 bucks, and a dash kit, 15-20 bucks. Disconnect your negative on your battery, and pull the fuse for your airbags before anything. Then there are 2 bolts holding the center of the dash in the glove box. Tilt the panel and off it comes, Take the old deck out, replace the antenna with the new adapter and colour match your wiring from the harness to the car. Put the dash kit on, and your center dash back. Put the airbag fuse back in and reconnect the battery, youre done. Read the instructions CAREFULLY and youl be fine.

you can get away with a cheap harness without the dinger if you do not have a monsoon system in your car. If you have the monsoon system in your car I would recomend saving for the "bracket" wiring module for the fact that it recieves the signal for your speakers via low level output, so you would need to have front and rear rca's on your Aftermarket Head Unit. However if you do not have a monsoon system and you still want the dinger all you would do is cut off the rca's on the wire harness and wire them up to your speaker outputs off of the deck. The cheap harness I think is the same as a 2000 Chev tracker, you would have to match them up tho.

Assuming you dont have monsoon, and dont care about loosing door/lights chimes; you can save $$ by getting a harness for a 00 Tracker, it will fit the factory plug. You only need to run a small 5 amp fused wire to a switched ignition source. I used the Brown wiper wire at the steering column (it is the only thick brown wire). This runs to the decks acc wire..

While you may think it is "BS" it is fact necessary for us dealers to do things PROPERLY. If you work for a shop and you are not doing things PROPERLY, then you have no business installing.
Fact - it is illegal in Canada to remove a safety device from a vehicle.
Fact - the chime module is classified as a safety device.
This is a lawyers world and a lawyer would drive a truck right through your abilities to install PROPERLY.
So, use the proper radio relocation harness ($90.00) or the radio deletion harness ($150.00).

And besides I would not worry bout the cops pulling you over, opening your door and saying you have no dinger in your car we are going to write you a ticket.
