Even if it is an address you know, do not open the attachment unless it is something that you have asked for.

If your buddies normally send jokes, make sure that there is a decent message included, not just: "This is funny, open it!".

Viruses come in many forms and extension are normally: COM, BAT, EXE, SCR.

A few additional tips for those who aren't use to viruses.

Make sure that if you are using Outlook, or Outlook express, to turn off the PREVIEW PANE. Many times a virus can be auto-executed just by viewing the e-mail (HTML E-mail, for instance, can connect to a website and prompt for a download).

Take the time to invest in Anti-virus. If you guys can afford audio equipment, you can afford a $50 software, and afford the (for Norton), $9.95 USD / year, for Subscriptions.

Note: If you see anything from Microsoft, that has an attachment. Delete it. They never send attachments. Ever.

I've been fortunate to have never had problems with viruses *knock on wood*. And I've been using the internet for quite a long time now. Virus scanners are your friends. I don't have it running all the time, but I do scan anything new I download/get sent. Regarding e-mail viruses, I don't use Outlook so my e-mails aren't automatically opened/previewed so I get to delete everything that I know is fake before it even gets a chance to infect my computer. Yeah...
