Unbeknownst to me or anyone else,Camp 8 Track beagn last night.Unfortunatly I had no camera..sorry guys.

It started with LBKC and I talking, wheeling and dealing and bargining on the possibilty of me buying a couple Pioneer Premier 10" subs.We talked about for well over an hour and I sat and figured out what I could afford(err..not afford.. .We have come to an agreement on it and we will begin box designing right away and probably build something in early April or so.(BTW:Rob has ideas,I have ideas...do you have any?)

We then proceeded over to Rob's work/shop where I pulled my car in and began what was thought to be a huge task of pulling my current box out of my trunk.I found a simple way of doing this..horray!After pulling the enclosure out,I pulled all the carpeting out as well.I did this for two reasons:1)It looked like 2)In hopes that the white metal surfaces will offer better resonance and/or air flow.We did this in my Sunbird during testing and it gained me 3 db.As well,I have it planned to mount a black light in the trunk...should look really cool.

Rob and I discussed different box postions, angles and designs. He seems to think a CRX box or Half CRX box will work.Your thoughts.

I had Rob repair the switch for selecting CD or 8 Track. After numerous problems,he got working for me.We ran a new main RCA cable to replace a temp set I was using that dropped my SQ drasticlly. Also in doing this,I was able to hide more wires and have a cleaner looking setup.Although I do have a lot of wiring clean up to do,this is definatly a good first step.

We did some rough testing minus a mic to get a rough idea where it hits best.We found it hits best between 53 and 57 htz.But wont be able to tell for sure til we get a mic going, which is something A-Rok and I discussed over coffee last night. We should likely do some testing next weekend.I will post the results from that and from when we get a new box built.

I will also keep you posted of any other changes, updates or clean ups I do.

But now I'm off to bed...I've been up 26 hrs and I'm beat...

I know its not much but hope you enjoy it.

Cant Wait For May 15th!!

A-Rok 03-21-2004 12:31 PM

Aaron, give me a call.

I already have a box that will slide right into your car to test with.

Thumper89 03-22-2004 06:10 AM

Thanks for the idea,Brandyn...I talked to ANdy and he says he has box close to that we can test with...So looks like everybody is on the right track..

This afternoon I maybe going out to the auto wreckers to snag a set of rims I saw there, alloy "star" style rims with black accents on the openings.A friend has even loaned me the money to go get em(his idea)...amazing..Spotted em on an 84 Z24...and their even 14" like Ive been looking for...

Cars going to be pimpin for the May 15th show..

Ok..the rims are on..they need some touch ups on the balck areas, but for $60 set of custom rims..who's complaining?

Thanks to Rob VO(again) for all his help in the mud pit of pick ur part and helping me do some tire swapping as well...

The car looks totally different now..will get some pics as soon as I can and as soon as I can figure out how to post em...

Next stop....BoxVille!!WOOWOO!!

Take a look and tell me what you think...

New Box and bodywork coming soon...

George 03-23-2004 05:54 PM

George is confused as to why anyone would still use a 8-track. George can't figure what possible benifit this would have other then a need to relive the 70's and experience something they might have missed out on back then.

George is shaking his head.

Hi

I'm B!!!

eight track are cool

Thumper89 03-23-2004 09:09 PM

There's more to the car than just the 8 track.Noone seems to notice the custom work done by the dude kneeling on the cowling,Rob V.O.(LBKC).He did the pods, the box and the mirror finish on the upper intake(notice the reflection of Pet Goat Bob)...

Anyway,I run 8 track because I want to.I used to do it for attention and to make some sort of point. But now its there becaue I want it there.

Thumper89 03-24-2004 03:09 PM

Lets give this a try..

Ok..So I've been up another 24 hr stretch doing more upgrades and testing on the Cavalier.

The evening started out by going out to Andy(A-Rok)'s house to do some mic testing. On the way out,I stopped at Robs house and picked up the 10" Pioneer's I've been thinking about. We set up a payment system I can deal with.Anywho,we(My Buddy Steve came along to learn and get his butt off the couch) got out to Andy's place and went about setting up the 10's in a box he had.A basic slot port setup that he had built, but hit real real real low freq's,but good for testing. Before installing the 10's we did a couple runs on the 12" Sony's.Best we could get out of them was 140.6 at about 53 hrz,but we didnt put much effort into getting them louder. We took the 12's out and finally got the 10's in with good swift kick to the port and some sweat on Andy's part.We began testing and ran into one problem after another(bad connections, out of phase wiring(How did you do that anyway,Andy?hehe)etc. So finally got everything up and running and got a 138.? out of them on the first good burp at about 59 hrz or so.Andy then started playing with the car and the box to try and get it louder.Andy even went as far as knocking the port out and making it smaller...by about 3/4.This brought the peak freq down to about 56/57 hrz.We got a 140.4 out of em after lots of runs.

Taking into consideration the voltage drop of the battery, new subs, and less than perfect box,I would say the Pioneers kicked the Sony's butt.I'm very happy with the results and look forward to seeing what the possibilities are for them. The Sony's by the way,are rated at 1200 max watts and are 12" Pentagonal cone. The Pioneer's are rated at 700 max watts, and basic 10" round cone with one hell of a surround. Also bear in mind as well,I paid more for the Sony's...I learned my lesson.

After leaving Andy's and going for a quick bite to eat,I went andmet Rob,who is sick as a dog with the flu bug I think I passed onto him,and he let me pull into the shop to do some clean up work on my wiring.I loomed all open and exposed wiring or hid them under or in the centre console.Under the hood I took all my wiring for amps and command start and run them in slightly neater mannner.I was getting tired of looking under the hood and hving wires screaming "LOOK AT ME!!"I'm much happier with how it looks now.

The next stage is to upgrade the upper plenum on the engine.I'm pulling off the 2.8 polished intake and mounting a 3.1L intake which is sitting on pizza box on my kitchen floor drying.I painted it wrinkle black. After a second coat,I will then install it on the engine and let Rob polish it in much the same manner as the 2.8L plenum.I will aslo be doing the same look to the front valve cover. It's gonna be sexy, man!!

Anyway..Thats all for now.We will likely be doing more testing again soon.I would like to make a fresh front baffle for me 12" box and mount the 10's in it to see what happens...time will tell..

I'm off to bed now...

Good to hear Aaron.

Thumper89 04-05-2004 08:25 PM

Ok,so this weekend as far as SPL goes I was productive as an Escort driver(dadoomching),but from the mechanical and appearence stand point I made some major headway..new intake, vavle cover(both painted wrinkle black and then all raised areas polished to near mirror finish),most of my unhood wiring is loomed and neatly tucked away, and some other odds and ends.

Unfortunatly,All I got done on the SPL side is a new baffle and holes cut in it.I learned alot about what to do and HELL OF ALOT about what not to do when cutting holes in a baffle..newbie with power tools here. Hope to get some mic time on this setup soon...and not at 1 am...

Does anyone know where I can buy some good used power tools other than pawn shops?I need to start buying some of my own...look out guys..Aaron's looking for power tools..

I will get some pics posted as soon as I can..

Talk at ya'll later...I'm off to look at body work supplies...me no likey..

Has been a very productive weekend at Camp 8 Track...Got the trunk lined with gravel guard(6 cans of the stuff)and even did the box to match.I have found in changing the box back to my old one and adding the graxel guard,it gives me a much deeper bass note.As to weather it's louder or not,to be seen still.

My good friend Steve finished the final polishing of the upper plenum for me while I was busy in the trunk. We did a swap of steering wheels as well to a Z24 model two-spoke wheel, and today I installed delay wipers and got a huge amount of body work done.I sanded for about 2 hours to get rid of the rust areas visible.Seems it wasnt as deep as I had thought it was, then I applied a good layer of gravel guard to the lower sections from wheel well to wheel well.Next weekend I plan to paint leaving the lower rocker black to carry the black accent through.

I have pics of most of this stuff, but havent downloaded them yet.

In the meantime, go to http://www.pbase.com/8trackboy/root for some pics of things coming along...
