Question:

Would you hire someone with well over 18 years exp and with OUT MECP??????

Pioneer Guy 04-27-2005 10:52 PM

If I ran an install shop, yes I would.

The best installers I worked with over my 10+ years in retail were NOT MECP certified.

Dereck Waller 04-28-2005 08:27 AM

I'll hire you Claudio!

Team Shadow 04-28-2005 08:44 AM

that depends on the shop. only if his references are good. call em up and find out. is this guy from somewhere foriegn or is he a well known installer.

he might have bad habits and you have to retrain him to your way of thinking. if he is a seasoned installer, you might butt heads with him or not. can you take him in an arm wrestle.

id say yes to this question but only if his installion experience is proven or can be traced.

Regarding MECP - IMO it is not necessary for anyone over 10 years experience and a good asset for anyone with under 5 years experience.

Not so much solely because of the experience itself but moreso that 10 years ago MECP was new and nobody had it and now none of the dinosaurs (me included) could give a rats ass to get it quite honestly.

However, guys with under 5 years should see it as some sort of quasi legitimate certification and should carry it.

BUT this does not mean that I would not hire someone who was maybe a noob but has enthusiasm and isn't a moron. Amazingly - those are tough prerequisites to achieve...

Check around with people he has worked with -- MECP is good, but not essential -- some of the best installers around have NOT done it.

Claudio Piccolo 04-28-2005 09:12 PM

hahaha. That is what I thought.

I agree that Certification would be a GOOD thing...BUT as of today there is very little to no weight behind MECP.

But now a few more question:
Mike, you are not at V's??
Shaugn: I do not think you would pay for the move out
Dereck: where are you working now.

And thanks for the "love" guys

No, playtime is over -- it was time for me to start doing "grown-up" work again. ;)

Paul Niwranski 04-30-2005 08:05 PM

Lol Mike - I have no choice you set your self up for it:

"grown-up" work ... Ractive, Eurolite, Roadboy
:D

Claudio Piccolo 04-30-2005 09:50 PM

Sweet, hope you are not growing up too much Mike

Hakujin 05-02-2005 03:53 PM

MECP ? Bleh.
It depends on a few things for me to hire someone:

1) Enthusiasm
2) Creativity
3) Efficiency (speed and accuracy)
4) Attitude

You can have all the skill in the world but if you are a dick who thinks he's hot ****, fuggetaboutit. If I run into any guy who sais he knows it all, I will walk the other way.

Claudio Piccolo 05-03-2005 07:46 PM

Attitude!!! Very Very important.

Need to have a GREAT ATT

i think you could pass the MECP basic without ever having done any installation. the book itself seems fairly basic and from what i hear, the test is the same way

Claudio Piccolo 05-13-2005 07:36 PM

MECP and the MECP Test are stricly based on theory. As we know theory is fine but practial is a WHOLE lot more fun

lol, people who only have theoretical knowledge and are trying to troubleshoot are really funny to watch.

Claudio Piccolo 05-14-2005 07:43 PM

Yes....yes they are

I was once certified, back in 98. Took it through mobile dynamics. Great school. But bein certified didn't help me find an installin job. Hence why I am an apprentice welder. But I still love to do my own installs.

Claudio Piccolo 05-18-2005 07:34 PM

Kinslayr looking for an install job???????

Kinslayr 05-19-2005 09:19 PM

Whatcha offering? I have relatives in Vic I could stay with.

Paul Niwranski 05-20-2005 01:20 PM

Eli47 05-20-2005 01:58 PM

I'd sooner hire someone WILLING to work than someone CAPABLE of doing the work. Willing people can be trained, those with certificates think they know it all already.

If this was directed at me, I would like to reply with this.

Wouldn't it be better to have someone both WILLING AND CAPABLE? And as I had previousely mentioned, I was certified. Certification is only good for 4 yrs I think. I do not have the answer to everything audio related. I took the course to better understand the theory of car audio, as well as get some decent shop time in, to better what little skills I had. Asking questions from experenced vets in the industry and by doing it, are the only way to move up in the industry. No book or school can make you a master at it. It is more of a guidline to follow. I havn't been employed in the industry, but I still try to do the best I can, with what info I have learned.

So don't judge people without knowing them first. Just cause someone might have had the ambition to go and spend the money to improve their knowledge, doesn't mean they are know-it-alls.

Claudio Piccolo 05-20-2005 07:57 PM

I think what Eli47 was getting at is most newbies with a cert think they can play with the big boys right out of the gate. I have been certified in the past and frankly there is no weight behind it..but......I do beleive that there should be some kind of certification by the Gov. (this would make it easier to write tools off, just like a plumber or contractor). I always try to work with the new guys and show, NOT, tell them how and why we do things the way we do them.

Hey Kin, if you want, send me your resume.....We are ALWAYS looking for Staff, I can look into setting you up closer to home.

Kinslayr 05-20-2005 08:23 PM

That'd be sweet. I am not too picky as to where I am, as long as there is lots of work. I'll build it and send it to ya.

Eli47 05-20-2005 11:17 PM

No it was not directed AT anyone. It's a statement I'm making, personally, not for the person I work for. OK??

Team Shadow 05-21-2005 05:56 AM

eli47 didnt mean anything towards you. he is one of the most peacefull guys. so try not to get excited over nothing. good to see you on here again. your headunit is processed and should be heading to you asap. i cant belive that you got that box in that shape. call em up and follow up with the ra number. ttyl

Claudio Piccolo 05-23-2005 10:08 AM

Hey E, how are things going down there at SC? The last I heard you guys were down a Tech. Back up to speed? The reason I started this thread is to find out how other shops are looking at people with and without MECP. I know some shops are only interested in MECP and would probaly pass someone with years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years years and years and years and years and years and years and years of pro work.

Eli47 05-23-2005 01:44 PM

Thanks for expediting the process for the HU Shadow, I had a nice chuckle when I got the box, at first I thought we suddenly became a RF dealer :D . I'll give them a call next week, thanks again for the continued support.
Claudio, yes we are looking for an installer, and the applicant doesn't have to be certified (just certifiable :D ). We are booked 3 weeks in advance ('tis the season), so yeah we need someone quickly.
Peace to all :)
