Looking into Keyless Entry systems...

Hi All

Since our wonderful winter has happened in the L. Mainland of BC, my well-worn outside locks will hardly even open...I've bent a few cheap keys, and even my ignition lock is so worn, I have to often re-insert the key a few times to get the thing going. It all started when the car was stolen about 6 years ago and the locks were jimmied and it's just gone from bad to worse since then.

It's quite hilarious - we couldn't unlock either door the other day, but the back hatch was fine, so my daughter climbed in the back and unlocked the doors from the inside! :)

The car is quite old and parts supplies (especially for the body) are drying up or are prohibitively expensive...I think door locks will cost something like $200 each side and that's without installation!

So, I though - ahah! A solution would be to install a keyless entry system and remote starter - I'm hoping to get away with paying only $250 for an installed system.

My car:

1992 Nissan NX2000, power locks, power windows, no T tops, stock Cassette stereo :smilie_au, no previous alarm. 300,000km! I don't really care about an alarm, except for maybe overnight. As you can kind of guess, there's nothing to steal but the car itself. I was wondering about getting an immobilizer...and then this lock thing happened.

Is this feasible? Yeah, I know :SELLIT: That's not gonna happen! Had it since new.

Yes, I would say it should be feasible. In my area you can normally get a starter with keyless entry for somewhere around $250. There are strictly keyless entry systems out there, but you might as well spring for the starter at the same time.

I say find a cheap alarm and try to install it yourself.

I got a remote starter/alarm from Canadian Tire for xmas that sold for $99. A few weeks later it was on sale again for $49.99.

Installing it into your car should be fairly easy
