Is it too much work
 

The car I just bought, 1999 Nissan Sentra, came with manual windows and locks. I am going to be putting a system in it in the next little while and really think an alarm would be a smart upgrade as well. This may be a dumb question but first can you get any alarms on the market that secure manual option cars and if not how difficult is it to turn my manual locks into power ones :dunno:

Shouldn't be an issue as far as the locks are concerned... I know way back when ('87) I had actuators installed in a Jetta that had manual locks.

I can't make suggestions on brands and models, but I'm sure one of the vendors here could set you up!

That's a relatively easy job. Expect to pay between $50 & $75 per door for installation and parts.

If anyone does know of products or brands that have alarms that arm manual lock cars please send some links!

SQ do you think it would be that much per door if I were able to get the parts from a power lock Sentra at a wrecker... also who would I get to put them in. Is that something a run the mill mechanic could do or no

ALL alarms will trigger actuators. you just need to install them in your doors. (if you are referring to locking the doors). As for arming, that is handled by the doors pin switch which has no relation to whether or not you have manual locks.

You'd be better off buying after market locks. They're way cheaper and simple to install for a trained professional. Try not to do this yourself. There are tricks to making sure that they work properly, for a long time. Also running wires along with the rest of the alarm...it's all part and parcel to professional installers work. Spend the $350.00/$400.00. You'll be very happy!

Mechanics replace parts, not integrate new parts.

That is brutal. I'm not looking to spend that much on door locks. I'm only going to have this car for about two years so I really dont want to put that much into the doors. Im going to be putting a stereo in and dont want it to get stolen. Is there anything else I can do to help the security of the car without getting an alarm.. and without switching to power locks

Mmmm, maybe you could trade that car in for one with power locks and alarm already built in. Or maybe you could consider it inexpensive and buck up. I believe that would be worth the convenience of not locking your keys in the car and having a piece of mind with security. It's your car. 2 years is a long time!

You do not need to have power locks to utilize a car alarm.

I guess so SQ but if I can get around it for now, I would rather do that.
