What makes a security system??
 

Having read a comment on another thread, I wonder how some of you view what a security system is? What it's designed to do?
How do you install a security system? What security features do you look for in a security system?
What convenience toys do you like in those features?
Have you considered Cel phone interface with your security system? Benefits/consequences?

For me, security systems are a couple of things. The siren itself is usually enough of a deterent, so that's one part of it. I prefer 2 way systems that will notify the owner of a tamper. With the two stage impact sensors that are on the market, something like a ball hitting the car, or someone's car door, initiates chirp for a warning and notifies the owner. Obviously range is always a concern, so that's always an important factor, especially in two ways. As for installation, I try and make the system as hidden and factory appearing as possible, so even the smart theif will have a difficult time. For example, I just recently installed a 2 way in a 94 240sx. The horn is hidden behind the battery tray, the wire actually runs between the fender and inner fender, completely hidden, and the wiring is all within factory looming. The brain is between the radio support and the glovebox. With a battery back-up, there is virtually no way to shut the system up without taking the car apart. All wires are taped completely before they were put in the looms. Aside from the antenna, there is no way to tell where the alarm is located... And even if you read above, you'd need to take some serious time to get the unit disabled without the FOB. That being said, it makes it very time consuming to remove or diagnose the system if there's an issue, or if the owner sells the car. Starter kill is an important feature to keep in mind for the individuals with higher expectations than just what's in the car, but labour time costs coinage, and a majority of customers are aware of the need to protect their cars, but even after educating to the benefits of that feature, most back out due to cost. Sadly, I'm no expert salesman, so there are numerous units out there that don't have that feature enabled, and I don't know any installers that work for free.... It is important to mention that the shop is not a private business that specializes in car audio, so the expectations, or preconceptions from the customer base is different. All I can say is listen to your installer!!! Any certified, experienced, trustworthy installer will give you sound advise, and when it comes to protecting your ride, it doesn't make sense to only go half way. If you don't have the coin to do it right, wait until you do, don't waste your money or time. As for cell phone tech, it's an interesting idea... I like it, but I can't see the feasibility in it... But that's just my opinion
