It's actually server load - not bandwith that the "who's online list affected" - it was eating resources like crazy

Wade... do you run your own server or is this run by the isp?

I'm just wondering why you care so much about the load.

Was the isp complaining or something?

It's hosted remotely... and was tying up waaaaaaay more than it's share of the processor. They were going to disable the script or the site... I went with the script. After poking around a bit more, turns out they recommend a dedicated box for a site with this much traffic... if you want to run the who's online thing.
