12' Alpine type R subs question

Hello

Im about to buy these two alpine subs : http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...jsp?cid=209818

Would this amp power it to the full potential since they need 1200 watts rms ?

http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...2&brandtype=18

By the way would I save money and get the same performance out of these subs cause they have the same specs or do the type R's kill them ? http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...8&brandtype=18

Thanks for help in advance :)

Get a 1500W amp for 1200W RMS.

veeman 07-31-2010 01:19 PM

So...for two of those subs, they are dual 4 ohm models and their final load impedance will be either 1 ohm, 4ohms, or 16 ohms. Therefore, you need to get an amp that puts out 1200watts (approx) at any of those impedances in order to fully drive the subs. The amp you have chosen maxes out at 2ohms, and you get only 800 watts at 4ohms...so it's not the optimal amp for these subs....however, alpine does make those subs in dual 2 ohm versions which would give you a final load of 2ohms for the pair and would make the amp appropriate for the subs...so easy answer is to get the dual 2 ohm versions of the subs. Can't answer if the excelon is better than the alpine, but i can tell you the alpine's are pretty damn good subs and these new ones should be even better than the last model which i owned.

Thanks for fast response veeman

So all I need is this model ? :

Ive used MTX in the past and liked them a lot so would this amp be better than that kenwood one ? or could you suggest a better cheaper one that has 1200rms.

http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_product_details.jsp?cid=57725&brandtype=545

veeman 07-31-2010 02:10 PM

Yes, those are the subs...dual 2 ohm versions. Mtx makes good amps from my experience, but the kenwood excelon are good too, some people don't like kenwood amps, but i've had no issues with them over the years. As far as other brands, the kenwoods are about as cheap as you can get for decent brand name amp...pioneer is relatively cheap too.

ChandlerD 07-31-2010 02:22 PM

Okay so if I use the MTX amp on those 2ohm ones will I be getting the full 1200RMS? Since im upgrading my subs and amp do I need a better Wiring kit or battery to run the system?

veeman 07-31-2010 02:41 PM

No...that mtx is 1200 watts at 1 ohm which is good for the first subs (dual 4ohm versions) and with 1200 rms watts you need a minimum of 4 awg wire, 0awg would be a good idea so you can add more later if you choose, plus there's less voltage drop with bigger wire which means more juice from your amp.

Lord Huggington 07-31-2010 03:09 PM

Get a 1500W @ 1 ohm amp.

Okay so would these wires be okay ?

Is it necessary to get a new battery for this whole setup?

Thanks again veeman !

Lord Huggington 07-31-2010 10:43 PM

A battery and an alternator wouldn't hurt to keep the voltage constant. Most stock alternators are good for 2000W before dimming. My stock-electrical 00 Sunfire GT didn't dim at all with 1500W @ 1 ohm, but it definetly wasn't putting out 1500W. Shoot for a 1500W amp if you want 1200W to the subs with stock electrical. So no, you don't exactly need to upgrade the electrical, but definetly do the big three and use 1.0 gauge wire.

ChandlerD 08-01-2010 02:24 PM

Whats 1.0 Gauge wire ? Where can I get that for cheap online ?

Lord Huggington 08-01-2010 06:00 PM

1.0 gauge is the largest size speaker wire you can hook up to an amp (battery & ground), depending if the amp accepts that size. It obviously has better conductivity. Any shop has it.

those are speaker wires for your speakers which are too expensive anyway (you can get this stuff at home depot and rona for a lot cheaper...copper is copper, don't get hooked by big name wire all they do is put a fancy jacket on the same wire and sell it for 3x-10x the price). For 0 awg (american wire guage) wire go to a welding supply company and buy it...it's plain black, actual 0 awg and cheaper than the fancy stuff but works at least as well. No you don't need a battery at this time, but you may depending on your listening habits...that can be added later if you need it. yw

okay perfect I got some for cheap today at a local welding store.

Where should I get the best box for these 2 alpine type R 12"

This is the box I was looking at because the guy at futureshop told me it would be the best sounding but its really expensive :

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/bassworx-bassworx-12-dual-subwoofer-ported-box-hpr212g-hpr212g/10099648.aspx?path=a033d3af2da8636f1df4399690ccd29 8en02

veeman 08-02-2010 01:20 PM

now go to a car audio shop and tell the installer you want a custom built box for your subs, explain what you want and he'll quote you a price which should be about the same as that one...but it'll work much better, fit the subs perfectly and the fit the car better...though it probably won't be as flashy. Just as an FYI, the Alpine spec'd boxes work very well in general and get very loud for daily listening, so if the installer doesn't have a lot of experience with these subs, just have him build the box to those specs preferably one box, divided into 2 separate chambers individually ported.
