85 amps

the alternator is 85 amps on my aveo, how limited am i will power?
im planing on running 1000-1200 rms is that posible?

the way i think of it my system gets it power from the battery, the alternator just recharges the battery (is that correct?) then the amps on my battery is more importent, a 1-2 ferad cap will help?

The alternator produces power while your car is running. Most of the battery's work is done when starting your car. After that, the alternator, recharges the battery, and supplies the vehicle with power, through the battery.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

85 amperes... Well, I was just looking at the Kicker amplifier owner's manual for another forum user, for that particular model, they suggest an alternator that produces at least 140 amperes. Now that was a pretty heavy duty mono amp for the subwoofer.
You could probably find some amplifiers that don't need as much juice, so that your alternator would be sufficient. A capacitor would help.

i will be runing 2 amps, rockford fosgate p450.2 and exile x600.4, the exile actualy puts out 596-600 rms, but the punch is prity underrated, some birth sheets said up to 600watts. if that helps.

Hey Denis,

I just checked the owner manuals for each of the amplifiers you mentioned.

The Fosgate manual reads:
" Amplifiers will put an increased load on the vehicle`s battery and charging system. We recommend checking your alternator and battery condition to ensure that the electrical system has enough capacity to handle the increased load of your stereo system. Stock electrical systems which are in good condition should be able to handle the extra load of any Punch Series Amplifier without problems, although battery and alternator life can be reduced. To maximize the performance of your amplifier, we suggest the use of a heavy duty battery, and a capacitor"

There`s not much mention about the Exile. However, the Fosgate recommends an 80 amp in-line fuse by the battery, while the Exile recommends a 50 amp in-line fuse.

You"ll have to find out if you need 130 amp in fuses, in total, or if a single 80 amp fuse will protect both amps.

A heavy duty battery is probably more efficient at letting power from the alternator pass through to your amps.

it would prob do the job if the wireing of the amps are good. but personnaly with an alt. that low i would slap on a bigger one. AND do the big 3 upgrade and a a HD battery i bit after

Sure a 1200 watt amp will draw over 100 amps. But will you be playing that amp 100% capacity 100% of the time? Probably not, unless you are competing in one of those "death matches".
I would feel fine with an 85 amp alt in a newer car as long as you have a good capacitor and have upgraded to the "big 3".

I've got an Aveo too and I'm wondering the same thing.
I was looking to put out around 1000-1200 RMS. I play music pretty much all the time. It's not always full blast, but usually is pretty loud.

If I were to do just the big 3, would I be fine?

BIGEVIL 10-16-2008 02:17 PM

The most likely scenerio would be to prematurely wear out the brushes in the alt. If you headlights dim like crazy when the bass hits (even with a good cap), then you have your answer. A bigger battery probably wont help.

whats BIG 3?

the 450.2 actualy needs 60 amp fuse inline insted of 80 amps, so in total i need 110 amps, but like some one said the system will not be crancked for more then 20% of the time.
