Hello all, I'm new here and joined to seek help with a peculiar problem. I tried searching the internet and this forum and couldn't find any information on this problem. Everything works as it should when the car is in acc or the on position. I'm getting 12.6v to the amp and 12v on the remote power. I'm only running it for a min (I don't want to drain the battery) but I can turn it up and it will hit hard and sounds good. I turn the car over and while it's running the amp comes on no problem, I can hear the subs playing. I have 14.6v to the amp and 12v to the remote while running. As soon as I turn the volume up at all around 10/40 it goes into protect and thermal. I'm still getting 14.6 to amp and 12v to remote when this happens. I turn volume down and amp comes out of protect/thermal and comes right back on. I turn car off and to acc and it hits like a truck again. I absolutely cannot wrap my mind around it. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank You

 

Turn your input on the amp down. Check your grounds and you may need a noise filter on the power side,what type of car are you using this in?

 

Hi Mark, Thank you for the reply! After much troubleshooting this past week I found the beginning of the issue. It's not at all what I thought it would be. It only does it when there is a sub connected to the right channel. I tried several different configurations to isolate it such as swapping L/R rca's on amp to make sure it wasn't an issue with the HU. Tested both subs on left and right channel by themselves. Both thermal/protect on right and play fine on the left. I did check grounds and have a very solid ground to both HU and Amp. The Amp is a Rockford T3002 That I've had since the mid 2000's. It's been in the car (2004 Mustang GT) for over 10 years and never had an issue until now. I'm now deciding whether to try and troubleshoot/repair this amp or go for a newer more efficient amp.

 

Ya I'm thinking bad channel,there's a protection diode I think may have burnt. Try to bridge it to mono.

 

Same result while bridged to mono. I'll have to open it up when I get some free time and see if I can visually find anything that stands out. Hopefully I can find a schematic and go from there.

 

Jus a thought since it has been sitting it may have corrosion of so.e sort,after you open if you see anything remotely close to corrosion use some electrical contact cleaner and blow out with compressed air gently. Magnifying glass to look at solder joints as they will get cold joint cracks that won't really see with glasses. You can do a reflow if your carefull,let me kno if this is of interest and will tell ya how.
