Hey guys I've got an issue with my car receiver (Dual XDVD8183). Here is what happened which led to the sound issue. Ive had it for about 5 month and have had no problems with it. I redid my center console on my car so i had to move the receiver out a bit since its a flip out touch screen. I moved it to the appropriate spot and went forward with screwing it in to the bracket that holds it in place. (The receiver was playing music right before this happened) I didn't realize that i put the screw in the wrong hole and as i began tightening it i heard a pop from my speakers and since then I've had no sound when i turn it on. Ive tried FM / AM / CD / DVD / Ipod but nothing worked. Everything else works it still starts up screen comes out but no sound. I blame my self as i wasn't being careful. I decided to open it up to figure out what part the screw had gone through. After looking at it i discovered that it had gone through the back of the FM / AM Tuner casing. Shouldn't there still be sound from using the Ipod and CD / DVD since its not radio or is that part required for all the sound. After taking the back case off all i can see is that there are some I'm assuming (resistors or capacitors) that used to be there but are now gone. It looks like they are the surface mounted types. (Really really small rectangle, brown colored)

I hope someone can help me with getting this fixed as its been a wonderful receiver but since then I've been stuck with a crappy Sony deck. Thanks again everyone!

Here are the photos that i just uploaded. Have a look guys and if anyone knows whats wrong and maybe where i could get these resistors / capacitors that would be great. I dont mind soldering some things. I just wanna get this working again. Thank you.

Anyone have any advice, I really wanna get this working again guys. I also sent an email to Dual the company and they gave me a $170 repair plus shipping. That sounds completely rediculous since i paid around $300 for the receiver when i got it. At the least if anyone knows where i could get those types of capacitors / resistors, what those printed codes are on the pcb like R24 R23 R16, and also if this AM / FM tuner is actually whats causing it to have no sound or if its something else that has fried.

The repair is actually fairly reasonable considering they are going to replace the entire board.

Do you have the tools and the skills to effect an SMT repair? Those that do know where to get these parts to I suspect not. A soldering pencil isn't going to do it.

So why do they need to replace the whole board instead of just desoldering the tuner and soldering another one on the board? and also I asked if the tuner is actually causing the stereo to have no sound or if there is something else involved.

Thanks again and I guess ill probably send it in for repairs.

cheaper to replace a board, i.e. you got a problem with your computer (hardware related) no one will actually repair it, it gets replaced, hell IBM does it all the time with their servers

Exactly. The entire board in that deck is probably less than $10 when manufactured in quantity. The time it would take a skilled technicial to even glance at it to figure out what part popped would cost more.

Have the manf'r do what it takes to correctly fix the problem, or shell out for another HU.
Life goes on, lesson learned (hopefully)
