Please help me fix my car subs, stock civic speakers painfully monotonous
 

I'm new to this site and have signed up for the sole purpose of having my problem heard by a community who knows more than I do. Somebody PLEASE HELP!
I have a dual 10" MTX Thunder TC510 subwoofer ( http://images.canadianlisted.com/nla...80_8015587.jpg ) powered by an MTX TC8001 class D mono amp ( MTX TC8001 Mono subwoofer amplifier — 800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms at Crutchfield.com ) I am using my stock speakers and stock head unit in my 2009 Honda Civic LX Sedan 1.8L. The subs were working for a year and a half but gradually started working intermittently since the last 6 or so months. I had assumed it was a bad ground as every now and then, the occasional bump would set it back on for a few seconds but have concluded it was not as I had scraped the paint from the chassis and securely bolted it. When there is proper ground/power, the amp displays a red light indicating that is functioning normally (does not mean it is in protect mode) and it has always been on so I don't think it's either of those connections. The two wires going from the amp to the banana plugs of the sub box seem to have a good connection, the subs itself don't have any sign of being blown as I've pushed on the subs itself and they feel normal. (I generally play music mostly at only moderate volumes) I've opened up the subs and taken them out from the box and inspected the connections. -all ok. Fuse under the hood and the three 30A fuses on the amp are in good condition.. My subwoofers seldom come on now but when they do, it doesn't last for long. Additional notes: I am not using RCA's to my amp, it's a 4 pin jack speaker output connector tapping into the wires of my four stock speakers. And I do not have a remote/wire connected in the "REM" slot between the "BATT" and "GROUND" slots on the amp nor do I have a remote gain control. Everything was working until recently, nobody nor myself have modified my car or anything in my car since it started to stop working so I'm completely stumped. MAJOR kudos if you know off the bat what could be wrong. Any suggestions would be of great help as I am completely out of ideas and would prefer not to take it in to a local shop.

When the amp is not making sound, is it on? ie is the light lit up? It sounds like you are using the signal sensing auto turn-on feature and sometimes that doesn't work so well.

If it is NOT turned on when it should be (stereo is on and playing) then use a small piece of wire to jump from the battery + terminal to the remote terminal. If this works you will need to run a remote wire from the amp to an ignition controlled wire in the car.

Once you get the amplifier turned on, if you still get no sound try plugging an iPod/MP3 player directly into the amp using a headphone to RCA cable. This should absolutely get you sound. If it does not, or it still comes and goes, then then amp may need repair. If you do get sound, then double check your signal wiring from the stock speakers.

Finally, or firstly should you choose, try bumping the woofers with a battery. Take a 9v or cordless drill battery and some short lengths of wire and touch them to the terminal plug on the enclosure (amp disconnected from it first) and see if they 'bump'. Just a check to be sure they are not dead.

Yes the amp light is on when stereo is on but nothing to the subs. I tried wiring the batt to the rem terminal. it didn't do anything while car was turned on. Only turned light on when car was turned off. Also tried 9v battery test to subs and both were working. I have now concluded there might be something wrong with my stock head unit or my amp. I bought a light tester/continuity tester whatever it's called and I opened up my amp and started poking around for about 20 mins. The light lights up at different intensities depending on how solid the connection. By hooking the alligator clamp of the tester to the ground terminal of the amp, (with all wires taken out from the amp) I poked the battery terminal and saw a very dim light on the light pen.. very dim but it's definitely there. Is this at all normal? Could this be my problem?

Have you gone through all your power connections and made sure they are tight and corrosion free? This is something that needs to be done periodically as stuff loosens up and corrosion is always going on. Check each place the wire has a terminal/connection.

Try a different sub. Just for the hell of it. I once had the same issue, turned out the tinsels were burned on the sub, but it still played if they happen to be at a certain angle.
