shop owners pls help

Hi, I have a simple question here- how do car audio shops provide the power to run the equipment indoors? - in other words how they manage to get hundreds of amps on 12 V DC?....

MR2NR 04-07-2010 01:41 AM

With very large power supplies that cost huge cake.

Where you can buy them? If you dont mind? All i could find online was a scientific equipment...

MR2NR 04-07-2010 11:09 AM

Tell me how large of a supply you want and I will get you a price.

LaZyLuke 04-07-2010 12:24 PM

12-14V - 100amps

Yes- and I've just been quoted for 1000 dollars- guys let's be serious I can get a low ripple dc supply that puts out 80amp for 300 bucks and 120 amp one with variable voltage for 500 - and those are scientific power supplies made for expensive laboratory equipment - read overpriced....

MR2NR 04-07-2010 05:25 PM

Yup, they are not cheap for me to purchase either.

Spawn-Inc 04-07-2010 05:31 PM

pc power supplies,

single 12v rail does 90 amps. though it's $500
Newegg.ca - PC Power and Cooling T12W 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

or a 83 amp single 12v rail for $220.
Newegg.ca - ABS Majesty series MJ1100-M Continuous 1100W@50°C ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified, Single 12V Rail, Modular Flat Cable Design, Active-PFC "Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power Supply - Power Supplies

Yes- thank you for the pricing, and all your help.

The high power PC PS are really expensive due to the size constrains and variable control voltage output that has to be provided at once and the fact that a standard one costs 60 bucks brand new

now I honestly cant believe shop owners pay $1000 for 100amp 12v non-regulated PS- cant imagine a price for those at 500 amp or 1k amp (is it $5.000? or maybe 20k?)... - are they made by JL audio or maybe Morel?

for 200-300 dollars I will be much more happier with a plate amp... this is nuts... I will try make one out of 15amp PC PSs (10 of em in parallel with stud diodes and regulated to match the voltage output) I can get them free at my work as they throw out bunch of them everyday with older pcs but buying one will save me lots of trouble that are prob gonna come up with this sketchy project.... and in a mean while look for industrial power supply

anyone that has information about a reasonable pricing for 12v, 100 amp PS is welcome- no offense MR2NR but whenever you trying to quote me on something you coming up with some crazy numbers....

MR2NR 04-07-2010 07:59 PM

NP, my jaw dropped on the pricing when it was told to me as well.

Sikk Nation 04-07-2010 10:18 PM

the problem with some of the scientific grade power supplies is that do not like being dynamically driven. It freaks out their processors. I run a modified 100A Samlex power supply and 2 additional batteries as buffers.

What an old shop I used to work for did was just run 2 large deep cycle batteries and a 12A charger. Could play the boards pretty much the whole day , every day and never a hiccup, was on the same batteries for the 5 years I was there

x2

Get a batt with a high reserve rate, and a decent charger

stephenfleming 04-08-2010 12:02 AM

My 60amp supply was very near $400.
I'm running a deck, 50x4, and a 500x1, and an Optima.
Just for the garage, doesnt get turned up very often.

Weman 04-08-2010 03:18 AM

Just get home audio?

LaZyLuke 04-08-2010 03:57 AM

I allready got quoted for 300 bucks for a 500rms plate amp, I think in gonna buy two plate amps eventually (1 for sub second for midbss) since decent car audio amp will cost me 200 at least I think it will be worth spending 100 more and get plate amps.... I'm allready running my deck from a single pc ps... Just have to solve a ground loop problem due to a shitty laptop dc converter...

Weman- for the sq and spl I will get with this setup I can spend thousands on "home audio" and it still won't be the same... Not mentioning half of my setup came free or close to no charge....

D113 04-08-2010 05:40 AM

Not sure where you are in Ontario, but A1 surpla near sherway in Toronto has all
kinds of new and used 12v ps's so you may find what you are looking for there.

Spawn-Inc 04-08-2010 03:38 PM

another thought would be to get an alternator and an electric motor and hook it up with a belt. you would need to figure out the sensing wiring though. also i've been told you need 1 hp per 25amps, so 4hp for 100amps.

LaZyLuke 04-08-2010 04:47 PM

I share a house, so runing a motor in my room will be very annoying... I will attempt that 10 pc ps in parallel, since they come free I'm not risking much ( maybe minor injuries when everything blows up)... Wish me luck!...

Ps thanks for the input everybody- after exams I will check out the a1 surpla that d113 mentioned... I don't mind spending few ( not hundreds) bucks on a decent ps... Thnx

stephenfleming 04-08-2010 04:52 PM

You could try an RV shop too.
They might have some decent power supplies as well

Weman 04-08-2010 04:52 PM

U need to explain to us what your planning on doing and post some pics. This looks interesting.

crash104936221 04-11-2010 10:40 PM

The old PC power supply's are going to be horribly inefficient and draw a fair amount of power from the wall for the feeble output they have

have you figured out what the system is really going to draw? not what it could draw but what i will take when playing at the volume your going to play it at most of the time

as long as you can provide slightly more power into the buffer battery then that you should be fine

i used to run my shop setup on a single group 65 800cca battery and 10A charger
it worked great for my pioneer HU pushing a 50x4 mtx amp and a tsunami db1100D running at 2ohm
could make the whole tin clad shop rattle lol (28'x36')
