Question Sub Pre Out Voltage...misleading?

I've been looking into this a bit lately and found some information on the ED forum. Wondering if it has any merit?

I read that a lot of H/U (Alpine to be specific) do not reach thier stated sub pre out voltage unless the sub output setting is cranked close to max.

This could apply to Pioneer as well because my sub pre outs are supposed be 4v, but I always keep the H/U setting at zero, or even -1 or -2 and I got almost no output when the PDX1.1000 switch was over on the hi voltage setting. When I changed the switch to "under 1v setting the amp came to life.

Anyone else heard of this? I guess it could be possible.

On a related note, what happens if an amp is rated for 7v inputs max, and you happen to have a H/U that outputs 8v? Do you have to purchase something to put inline and drop the voltage, or should the amp be ok?

music is dynamic and you'll very rarely if ever hit the rated pre-out voltage of a deck, using an 8v pre-out to an amp rated for 7v will not be a problem at all.

much like watt ratings, don't take the ratings too seriously.

I believe most headunits pre-out ratings are a peak or max rating.

Ah, I see. I was under the impression it was a constant 4v / 5v/ or 8v from the second you turned on the deck.

Learned something, thank you.

As for the 8v, I'm really interested in that Eclpise MK7200. Its on right now for $399.00 from Sonic and includes harness & mounting faceplate. No amp, but thats more of a feature as far as I'm concerned.

John, you are aware that it is refurbished and has no warranty in Canada? I'd rather give you a deal on a new one so that you had the 3 year warranty and free replacement if stolen that a Canadian customer gains when purchasing from a Canadian authorized dealer.

No, I wasnt. I looked very, very closely and did not see the refurb part. I did not realize they were not an authorized reseller though.

If you were to shoot me a pm with numbers i would appreciate it. The harness and mounting plate (while inexpensive) are not something I could go to my local Canadian Tire and pick up, so I need them as well.

05 Ford Escape

Cheers!

Alpine's +15 is actually the ZERO point. they have Zero to minus 15.

It's not misleading. they are only designed to put out that voltage ating with a sine wave with a CD recorded at 0DB reference at maximum volume rating (62 on pioneers).

Most new head untis have gone back down to 2.2V ratings as well.

I suppose misleading was a poor choice. Still misleading to the uninformed, but then again, thats the uninformed guys problem.

At least I learned something
