Polyfill eats up inner volume...if your enclosure is too small and you add a pound of pollyfill you will reduce the inner cf3 of the enclosure and the output and low end extension will decrease doing the exact opositte of the desired effect with the small sealed enclosures I did notice a small difference..I only go this route in one of those small custom stuffed in the corner sealed fiberglass enclosures in places where space is a real issue Tom Nousaine did actual imperical measurements of the effects of different amounts of fill (1/2lb per cuft, 1lb per cuft, etc) in an enclosure in a magazine article about 10years ago. His measurements indicated that the smaller the box, the more the fill had the effect of mimicking a larger enclosure, up to about 1.5lb/cuft IIRC. Personally, when asked I tell people to try it out. Polyester fiberfill is cheap. Listen, stuff some in and listen again. It will be better, worse, or the same. Act accordingly. |
I only use it when I'm asked to..some people see the manufacturers recomend the polyfill..
I have tried stuffing small,big,sealed ,ported but found that with the correct cavity it really didn't make much difference at all... but the tonality changes slightly in the smaller ones I don't make to many small enclosures so the polyfill is not an issue very often IMO it's just one of those band aid type of things that isn't needed if the subs enviroment is correct excuse my wording if it seems off....I would never make a good english teacher....LOL |
This "band aid" idea keep sgetting tossed around...I'm not sure what the point is. If the "band aid" solves the problem, then it's a perfectly legitimate solution. If your finger is cut and it's bleeding, the band aid solves the bleeding problem. I suppose the best solution is to not get cut at all, but that's not reality. Similarly, if you are forced to use a smaller than optimum enclosure because of the need for usable space, then the use of polyfill may be a "band aid", but if it solves the problem, then it is a satisfactory solution.

i have a 1 cubic foot enclosure stuffed about 75% full of fake snow cotton that i bought at canadian tire. its made a bit of a difference with the lower range but not a huge amount. just my 2 cents

i stuff polyfill to fine tune and get the response i'm going for no matter how well built and braced my box is.

I'd say it's definitely worth it's investment, particularly in very small enclosures. If it was 100.00 or more to do it, I'd pass, but for under 10.00 it's definitely worth it. I've found it gives the lowest octaves a little more authority than without it. Anyway, it's one of those really cheap experiments that anyone with ears can do and undo if you don't like it.
