Alpine type R sub question?

Alpine type R sub question?
hi!
my buddy just got two Alpine 12" type "R" dual 2 ohms voice coil subs! he's got a 2003 neon or cavalier?... I forget cause I'm asking of course! and he's gone for a week but I still wanna get an opinion on here :-)
I called Apline for him and they told me to put the subs in a o.85(each) sealed box! he's buying an MRP M850 alpine amp to push the subs. what do you guys think of that, would it be better in a ported box? or does this sound right
thanks

thanks for the reply!
so you think the amp is kinda small? cause he hasn't bought it yet! he just made a deposite on it, do you think he should go with another one insted? and if so, what do you think would be best?
thanks

I have been working with a couple type r's now or about a year, and from all the different boxes that i have built i have always go a better result from building the box bigger and tuning it lower, i am currently running my type r's in a 1.75 ^ 3 box @ 32, which i believe is the specs alpine recommends. The type R's will also give the best output at lower frequencies. My best result was a 2.5 @ 31hz.
If you run a ported box (i dont recommend a sealed for these subs) it will definitely help with a smaller amp, these subs will take extra power if you treat them right.
and btw that amp is fine..

all depends on your wants and needs...I have the same subs in that exact size box, also sealed, and I'm very happy with the SQ and SPL. I personally like ported, large boxes, but in this case I required more trunk space. I have to say that I'm very impressed with the type r's, they are very tight, clean, and get extremely loud for such a small enclosure...at least as loud as my previous set up. The last set up was 3 Infinity ref1230's in a 3.5 cube Net ported box built by 20Hz in Woodbridge. Now, obviously the Alpines are a more powerful sub, but to get the same output with a sealed box half the size and with the same amp/power going to them was impressive. Anyway, only you can know what your needs are, just thought I'd let you know that if all out output was not necessary, you still can get great sound quality and output with a small box.

ok thanks for your opinion on this guys, as soon as my buddy get's back he'll get the amp so we can try it and see.. or hear I should say ;-) so that way if it doesn't sound right I will get back to this thread for some info

the MRD M1005 will just power it better.
