$200 for a prefab box. no way.
$200 for a custom built box from a reputable shop built for your sub and music tastes maby but still expencive
$50 for a sheet of mdf glue and screws.. heck yes.

im not saying it sux. but your money could be spent more wisely.
you can stick a sub in a box and it will make noise .but stick a sub properly built/designed box and it will sound 100 times better
why not have a box built to maximize your subs potential.?

Ok..yes its great to build your own boxes but lets face it. Most people don't have the ability and/or place and tools to do it. Do me a favor before you talk like this. Just so a little math. I don't think $200 for a custom built box is bad at all. Concider this:

Materials: wood, screws, glue, carpet.......definitely more that $50
Now how long will it take you to build and design it? If you owned a shop how much would you expect to get for an hourly rate?

If you spend the money on the sub you shouldn't be afraid to spend a few hundred on a nice custom box to go with it.

Ok, thats cool...just read it wrong I guess.

Just on a side note...there are some very good prefab boxes out there. But you can't just pick on that looks pretty. You need to know what your sub needs...airspace, tuning....

$180 is still quite cheap, given that the box is designed and built correctly... like said above figure the materials plus the labour... for a well built ported box that's braced, seams sealed, carpeted, or vinyled glued and screwed that's probably about 4 hours of work. factor at 50$ an hour plus materials, that's 200 plus materials... and that's still very cheap for a well built box.

if you can do it yourself, all the power to you, but if you need a shop to do it, they have many more expenses that you have...

I agree,

BAssworx makes a decent pre-fab if the box internal air volume and port specifications fall within what your subwoofers requires. There are also other decent pre-fab boxes on the market.

That being said, If you can have a custom box made for $200.00 to the specifications of your woofer it is a tremendous value.
