Best way to do this in an Audi A4

Hey guys, so I'm helping my buddy out with his system in his 2003 audi a4, and pretty much in the brainstorm process and I need some ideas for design here. Ok here is what we are working with pretty much

http://dubfoto.com/albums/userpics/1...Size_Spare.jpg

but obviously with no spare tire/ tools. This leaves quite a large area to work with, but it is in an odd shape as it was formed to fit a tire. I have seen a few interesting installs in this area such as the woofer placed directly on top of the spare tire, and the woofer placed down in the wheel well. In your opinions what is the best way to install a woofer/enclosure in the provided space. There is no real preference so far, either a 10" or 12" will do, but I'd love to hear some outside input first, and I will try and get a image of the area as it sits asap. Thanks.

what is in the side of the trunk ?

Browntown_07 10-02-2008 08:29 PM

Oh sorry good question, ok as you can see in the image there is a cover that goes over the spare tire area (that thing lifted up with the handle), there is nothing else in the trunk, but the goal was to conceal the equipment and keep it clean, some thoughts we had was to take out that spare tire cover and work with a false floor, as there is no tire in there anyways there is no need to worry about that cover anyways, so the cover can be incorporated or not, does not matter

zzzzzzz 10-02-2008 08:35 PM

is it just a sub aup and sub in there or are you haveing a 4ch in there too or a 5-6ch amp ?

Browntown_07 10-02-2008 08:37 PM

yes just sub and amp, no other speakers will be running off this set up.

zzzzzzz 10-02-2008 08:37 PM

spl ? or sq

Browntown_07 10-02-2008 08:39 PM

I'm gonna say sq, and design as this car spends some time at shows and what is gains in exterior/ performance points, it lacks in interior/ I.C.E. points. Thanks

zzzzzzz 10-02-2008 08:40 PM

f/g the bass of it amp on a 45* wiht a 12" ported or 3x 8" subs

zzzzzzz 10-02-2008 08:42 PM

i like 3x 8" 2xamps 1, momo 2,4ch on a 45*

Browntown_07 10-02-2008 08:42 PM

Sorry I did not include any dimensions of the area but I will as soon as I can, "zzzzzzz" if we went this way how would we cover it up? Would it still fit under the cover or are you speaking in terms of using the trunk space it's self? thanks

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin.....

I would measure up the area first to figure out the airspace you have to work with. I would attack this from the top down. As in make a cover, leave space for the amp and the sub so that they are not flush with the top cover, this will leave you the balance of the space left to work with. Cardboard is your friend here. I would think that for a good balance of sound with the stock system, a single 10" or 12" in a small sealed box would easily do the trick. This will tell you whether you need to move the amp somewhere else (to gain more airspace for the box or for mounting depth for the sub). How will you be integrating the amp into the system, a basic LOC or a advanced interface adaptor that will allow you to control the sub?

Browntown_07 10-02-2008 09:55 PM

Ya MR2NR that's kind of along the lines of what I was thinking, I will for sure get measurements soon, it has a fairly strong system stock (he hit 116db in a no sub class and took 2nd haha) but he has a pioneer AVIC-D3 h/u and we both love the idea of a cover to look clean and stock, maybe with some embossed audi rings, (all that can be determined later) anyways I figured it would be good to start with some cardboard, my main issue is how to build the box, airspace wise does it matter what shape the box is if it is sealed and as long as it is the correct cubic feet? Thanks

zzzzzzz 10-02-2008 09:58 PM

yes yes yes but the floor can go up and make a new that looks like the stock one ! i would have the sub on the sibe not in the well ! one on each side (ported ) amps in the well ! oh with a fan on two . have the amps on a 30*-45* rewire the car for the new speakers run the 4ch to them and the momo to the subs
balance of sound with the with the new speakers i would run two 12" subs (one for each side of the car

Browntown_07 10-02-2008 10:38 PM

My only concern of having the sub on the side is space and factoring in building the box I feel it would be tricky and a odd shape, in the middle if we took advantage of both the middle of the wheel well as well as the fact that we can move the floor up I feel it will be a little more manageable, thanks alot for the ideas, just quick question though ,does it matter essentially what shape the box is? Say a long rectangle that is more wide then deep for space reasons, as long as it fulfills the need of air space I will be ok right? Thanks again

Here is an idea of the size of the wheel well Attachment 22937

ok question, in a set up like this

Attachment 22936

is the box just in the area that the two subs are sitting in? regardless of shape of box?

zzzzzzz 10-03-2008 11:41 AM

for sq no
i get dust and crap on the sub that i need to claen or you haer it with my sub that way

Browntown_07 10-03-2008 01:48 PM

well the plan was to have the sub covered anyways, like where that guy has the subs exposed, we wanted to continue the floor so its hidden

zzzzzzz 10-03-2008 02:41 PM

when you cover the floor you might make it into a 4th order box .look at the floor over my amps

Dukk 10-03-2008 03:01 PM

lol, 4th order.. :retard:

You're easiest option is to recreate the pic that was posted above. I hate that spare tire well - sliding a pair of 10s in the back like in that pic is the best option.

MR2NR 10-03-2008 03:11 PM

The box can be any shape under the sun as long as it is the proper volume for the sub (s) to be used. With integrating into the stock system, a single driver is going to be more than adequate. If you ever anticipate that you will be adding power to the front and rear speakers, consider right now the second sub and build appropriately. Keep in mind as well that even though the speakers are inset into that box, the cones move and the surrounds or cones cannot make contact with absolutely anything that is going to sit above them. That is certian failure for the sub. Allow enough airspace for them to clear any obstruction placed overhead. A good solid upholstered aluminum grill will solve this issue for you.

Thanks this was my main concern, thanks! And yes zzzzz I see what your saying, very clean thanks

godzilla1978 10-03-2008 07:00 PM

if it is sealed the shape shouldn't matter, as for covering it if you cover it it may turn it into a type of band pass box which may make it sound like doo doo.your best bet is if it's covered make the part that covers the subs out of grill cloth that way the subs can move and breath freely.

Browntown_07 10-03-2008 07:16 PM

I was thinking of covering it with a false floor, then embossing some kind of audi rings in the middle, and then in the middles of the rings use a mesh, so it still comes off clean but allows air flow
