Box for 10" L7's
 

Hi everyone,, been a while since I've been on and I need to build a box.

Equipment is: subs: 2 10' Kicker L7 dual 2 olm
amp: Kicker 600.1

I will be running the subs series up to 4 olm, then back down to 2 together.

I will be using this stuff,, so please don't respond by saying that I need new stuff. thanks.

I will be doing a blow through type set up in my 4 door S10.

The rear wall is getting cut out and a steel enclosure made to house a sub box. The steel box will be part of the cab, not the bed.

The steel box will protrude into the bed and the bed will be cut out to fit around the steel box, but don't worry about that.

The dimensions of the steel enclosure will be 16 high, 48 wide and about 15 deep.

I can make it less deep if I want, but I can't go futher that that.

My question would be, should I run the subs sealed or ported and is this enough space to build a box to suit these subs?

Can I run them bandpass?

I'm not into SPL competing, but I used to and I like lots of bass, and more low end.

Box will likely be made of 3/4 mdf with some fiberglassing.

i just did this for 2 15'' l7 but i didnt cut the cab, kicker has great basic dimensions for a box if you look up your sub in manuals on their website. min size ported is 1.25 cu ft and max is 2.25 cu ft, i did a rough design and came up with 1.47 cu ft per sub, total with port 1.79 cuft to fit in your measurements this will give you both decent rock and rap bass not too low though you might be able to squeeze a little more if you play with the calculations but you could also lose higher notes..if you want more hit me up..i used these same parameters for my cousins 12'' l7 and it worked great too.. im running a kicker 800.2 to 2 15s approxamately 250 rms each and i can hit 130 db at about 48 hz with kickers parameters on a ported box .. i had no luck with a sealed box..

I get around 4.5cuft net air available. In that, port tuned to 35hz, it's looking pretty mental. :thumbsup:

I would suggest calling Kicker and asking their tech support and box design experts there. Knowone will know the product better than them and how to apply it the most beneficial way. They have always been very helpfull to me in the past.

A 4th order would probably work the best for you

My experience is there support is trained to tell you exactly what there PR department wants not what's best. Find a professional who builds high end systems because its what he loves to do not just because he's paid to do it. I worked at a local install stop and I can vouch that its get the car in and out asap and sell the product which generally means cramming big subs in small sealed boxes that fit in a trunk... it sucked

I suppose it does make sense that the PR department would have direct control over the tech support and product specialists that have worked with the product for years and in some cases were part of their design. I mean why would they want to help you maximize your Kicker gear, it just makes no sense.

Sorry PR isn't what I intended to say. Not sure what eles was on my mind at the time but let me explain the concept behind my reasoning

Kicker is in the business for 1 thing only, money. The simple fact is if kickers subs love large boxes with big ports (at least the L7 subs). They will work in smaller enclosures but they will not be maximized as you call it. So if your kicker and someone calls you and said I want to buy 2 15" L7's for my honda accord and I need help building an enclosures, do you tell them to put them in a 3-4 cu ft sealed enclosure or do they tell them that those subs in a box maximised for their output wont fit in their car possibly advising them to just get smaller subs or something. Keep in mind if you advise someone to do that they may look at other brands like MTX who could offer 15's that they say can fit in the car potentially losing the sale. So in a sense they do want to help you but they first want to make money. Its somewhat of a conflict of interest you could say.

A good installer on the other had has little to lose by giving you an honest opinion. He's making money off of the enclosure either way. he would likely tell you that the subs will or wont meet your goals if you ask and possibly even provide you will recommendations on different sizes or other subs to help the customer reach their goal.

You may also take note that those individuals that are winning the completions are often just people who love the game not necessarily the vendors or the designers of the subs themselves.

Kicker will sell you the subs, not build you the box. They will tell you to buy their box, its the best box every made for those subs.
So they say ...
