Enclosure question?

Enclosure question?
I am currently running a single DD3512 with a 1000 watt mono Alpine amp. {model # escapes me right now} I built a 2.5 Cu/ft ported box to spec from the DD website, using there schematics as a reference. Primary music I listen to is Rap.
To me it sounds bloated/boomy... 1 in 10 songs hits nicely and I am not sure whats to blame.
- Do you guys think my lack of skills caused the box to sound like crap?
- could it be the amp or sub, or a combo of both?
- Would a sealed box solve anything?
if you need more info let me know and I will happily provide it...

I'd be willing to put money on the tuning being too high.
The DD box specs iirc tune to 40Hz, which isn't really ideal for listening to music with lots of bottom end.
I used to tune at 42Hz, then built a box tuned to 32Hz, HUGE difference.
May not be as loud on a mic, but its great on my ears.
