slot vs circular?
slot port vs. a circular port which one is in your opinions better?
which is suited to sq / spl / or a bit of both? |
spl=aero ports slot port=sql both are ment for differant applications

I used round ports in my box. now I'm spl :D lol.
I prefer to use round ones, because there's less to be worried about when constructing a box, ie making the lengths of the slot port right and all that extra bit of work. I'm just lazy. My home speakers use round ports too, damnit I got that mad tyte spl setup at home lol. |
I love Slots :p

there really is no one better for SPL or for SQ its all a matter what fits best for the application |
From an aerodynamics standpoint, an external round flared port is your best choice; this is also why it works so well for those who compete in SPL.
The obvious issue is that flared ports require a little more work. If you want to flush mount them, you need to get the router out. You should also stabilize the port in some way. Additionally, it is challenging to work with a long, round pvc port, whereas a slot port can easily be tied into the enclosure and bent at will. Again, there are great advantages to a round flared port, but a slot port is usually easier to integrate, particularly for tuning low. |
If you get good ports you don't need to worry about stabilizing them and so on. Of course PVC pipe isn't going to work wonders, but it can :). Just screw that thing to the box lol, doesn't look too good in neato installs. Also there was something in my mind that has to do with the "roundness" of the mouth of the port, sharp angled ones didn't work too well for my friend Seahag on here. I didn't get too much in depth about that.
If you look at these ports, they just need a hole in the box and you drop them in.http://solen.ca/pics/pt3fl.jpgThey don't seem to be leaking either if you test and fit them properly and add some carpet on top so it's even more tight. I only wonder why are they only doing them in 9 and 12 inches in length. If anyone finds ports of various length of that type please let me know :). |
a regular port functions the same way as an aero port... and there will not nescisarily be any difference between them...
The effective length of a aero port will be closer to its actual length..... and the effective length of a regular port will be slightly longer.... |
for a daily driver box I prefer to use big long slot ports. Seems to work well.
For SPL, aeros have certainly proven to be loud. But a well designed slot can be just as loud, they're just harder to tune. |
