Im thinking of building a new box for my woofers because i have shop class next semester and i was thinking of making a slotted one. I have a few Questions tho concerning the sound difference.
What does the size of the slot determine?
Is it the bigger the slot the more bass or is it opposite?
Also if I make the board (which i call board A)that goes into the box longer or shorter what difference will it make.
And last what difference would ot make if i rounded the corners inside the box.



I hope the drawings help even though they are VERY sketchy( dono if they will come up or not ). Thanks for all the help

all else equal the small port will have greater velocity and the large port more area; for the same volume... (analgous to a high power 10" compared to a low power 15")

that said you should get fewer losses with the larger port

so the smaller port should hit higher notes and less of the low notes, while the bigger port will hit just about all the notes? will the smaller port make it louder because it can only hit so low?

Compared to a smaller area vent of the same tuning, a larger vent will:

1) Be longer
2) Be more efficient (ie louder)
3) Have less port noise, and
3) Be less forgiving. This one is important - a vent begins to unload the woofer below the tuning frequency. The larger the vent the faster and more drastically this happens. Mega vents can lead to woofer damage.

One more question
would rounding the corners on the inside of the box help at all with the sound?

SPL guys pretty much swear by rounding the inside corners. I've never done before and after testing.

Sonotube in the corners backed with expanding foam and maybe a little fiberglass seems to be a popular way to go for some people...... and there are really different ways you could break it down... but all else equal the internal shape of a subbox can only effect higher frequencies.... and its not really a concearn in car audio....

focus on craftsmanship and making sure your shop teacher hooks you up with good wood stock to start with! Id totally ask for void free birch ply; but Id also demand cheap *** MDF before I used the pine ply they probably have lying around !!!

Also, if you design a box for specific subs for specific reasons... and can explain it when the shop teach talks to you about the project..... you are going to get a good mark....

ok thanks. For the wood we have to supply our own, so im going to buy some mdf. For the sub specs, they are kinda hard to find for my crappy pyles so i dono i might some specs to make it sound good for the teacher
