HISTORY The third generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class cars went on sale in 2007 as 2008 models. Only four-door sedans were available because the wagon was dropped in North America after the second generation. In this country, these cars were sold in four levels - C230 (replaced by the C250 in 2010), C300, C350 and C63 AMG - each with a different engine. Those engine choices ranged from a relatively economical 2.5-litre inline four to a massive 6.2-litre V8 in AMG versions, which are capable of 0-100 acceleration in the 4.0-second range. Generally, the bigger the engine the more standard features, although even base C230s and 250s are well equipped. THE GOOD STUFF This is the second best-selling entry level luxury car in North America (behind the BMW 3 Series), so used examples are plentiful and many newer models will have warranty remaining because of Mercedes’ 4 year/80,000 km bumper-to-bumper coverage. Certified pre-owned vehicles with extended warranties are often available at Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Interiors are of high quality, although a little austere, and rear seat legroom is good. In Canada, all cars except the C230/250 came with the AMG body kit standard. Models equipped with Mercedes’ COMAND operating system got a revised version that was much easier to use. The 2008 C-Class was a Consumer Guide “Best Buy” and helped restore the Mercedes reputation for reliability that had taken a hit in prior years.
