Nissan debuts unibody Pathfinder SUV concept

Nissan is showing off the concept version of the fourth iteration of its Pathfinder SUV, which is now a unibody crossover. It's calling it a reinvention of the vehicle. "If there is one constant among the first quarter century-plus of Pathfinder's existence, it has been its ability to innovate," said Al Castignetti, vice president of Nissan North America in a statement. "With the upcoming, fourth-generation model, we're about to re-invent Pathfinder again. " One of the biggest changes to the upcoming Pathfinder design is the return to a unibody platform. That means the chassis and body are all one piece of metal. That's different than standard SUVs, which traditionally were bodies bolted to chassis. The body-on-frame construction is more rugged, but it uses more gas. Nissan says the Pathfinder has done the unibody thing before -- in its second generation.
