$1000 budget.
 

My friend would like to put a system in his car, he has a budget up to $1000 and would like to include the following;

Deck
Amp ( mono )
2 x 12" subs
Dual ported box


Personally i was thinking of getting him Alpine stuff because that's what he wanted but i'd like some more input from you guys,

Right now i was looking at getting him 2 Alpine Type 2 12" subs

Alpine MRP M500 AMP

Alpine CDE 9874

Bassworx dual ported box

+ wiring kit and cap.


Any other opinions ? he would preferably go Alpine but i know there's a lot more out there to choose from. thanks.

with a 1000.00 budget, I'd look at the for sale section...lots of great equipment for cheap.

You accidentally typed in "Type 2" for your subwoofer choice...
I'm not certain which one you meant to say. Type R? S?

Anyway, that amp will put out 500W on a 2 ohm load. If you run two 12" that means you're putting 250W on each. The RMS on the Type R's is 500W. Running a pair of these off that amp would be a waste.

I would suggest listening to a single 12" Type S in a ported box running at 2 ohm on that amp, so its getting that 500W. Then listen to a pair of twelves, on the same amp. Your friend might be more satisfied with the single Type S getting a good amount of power, then two under-powered Type R's. And he'll be saving some money. Even buying a single 12" Type R, and using the money he would spend on the 2nd sub towards a more powerful amplifier would be a good idea.

My other concern is that the bass of a decent subwoofer/mono amp setup will over power the music that the rest of the speakers are trying to produce off the weak head-unit amplifier.
I urge you to go into an audio shop and listen to a decent pair of speakers with and without amplification.

Here's what I would do. Listen to the setup that you and your friend have come up with. Then listen to this one. (Click the red text for links)

CDE-9874 Head-Unit. Front pre-outs for front speakers. Rear pre-out to run mono subwoofer. ($180 USD)

MRP-F600 4/3/2 Channel Power Amplifier. It'll supply 100W x 2 @ 4ohm, and 300W x 1 @ 4 ohm (bridged) ($450 USD)

SPR-17C These 6.5" co-axial speakers have an RMS of 100W. Suggesting these, assuming this size will fit the vehicle. Components (separate tweeter) generally sound much better, but can cost significantly more. ($180 USD)

SWS-1223D 12" Subwoofer (2Ω+2Ω) You'd have to get the voice coils wired in parallel to ensure the bridged amp is getting a 4 ohm load. Thus providing this 300W RMS subwoofer with 300W of power. ($170 USD)

The prices are off Alpine's site. The total would be $970 USD before tax. I would go to the Alpine site and find a list of their retailers in your area. Then send out emails to all of them stating what you're looking for, and what the price will be. I'd be surprised if you could not get all of those items for about the same price in Canadian funds. You might have to buy it all at the same time though.

You can save some money by not sticking with Alpine. But its a brand that is usually worth the money you spend on it.

Just don't let him be so set on a pair of 12" that he won't listen to other options. There's more to music than copious amounts of bass.

I didn't include the price of a box, install, and the necessary wiring and hardware. Its hard to stay under $1000 on new quality equipment. If he has no aversion to used, then its worth checking out.
