12" subs in an MR2???

Hey everyone. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself since you guys don't have a "new members" forum section. But this is my car- 1991 MR2. I want to put two 12's in there. One behind each seat in the cabin. Don't know if I will have enough room though. I only want 12's... So 8's or 10's are not an option. Looking to get around 600-800rms in there. Should be plenty in super small cabin.

My only concern is building a box that'll fit behind the seats. There isn't much room. I could cut out the storage boxes behind the seats, but I'm not sure if I want to do that as it'll decrease the value of my car. However, it would definitely give me the room that I need. I do want to cut out those boxes (will have to cut through metal), but a part of me says don't do it (because I'll be decreasing the value of my car). Not sure really sure what I want to do, but I do know that I want crazy bass... Loud ass bass vs Keeping the car mint and not permanently modified... hmmmmmmm

Thoughts?

take a look at some of the new shallow mount designs and go from there. I know of ones from Kicker, Pioneer, Kenwood, JL Audio. They're all worth looking at and possibly keep you from hacking up your car.

nice! turbo or n/a?

why is it that 12's are the only option? you can make 10's sound damn good

Agreed, especialy in a cabin as small as the MR2. Other option that I've seen done on MR2s and Fieros is to build an enclosure to fit under the hood and port it into the cabin. Not sure if you'll get 12's in there but may be worth a look.

Having owned that very car since 1993 (a turbo) I can tell you that 2 10" in the right box will outperform 2 12" in the wrong box. I used Eclipse aluminum cone 10" in small sealed boxes and cut out the bottom metal that supports the rear parcel shelf. I was also still able to keep my t-roofs back there. The thing absolutely thundered with those subs.

If I do decide to cut out the rear storage boxes, I'll be building custom boxes that measure:

Bottom Depth: 14"
Top Depth: 2"
Width: 18"
Height: 26"

Should give me around 2cuft. I'd like for it to be tuned to around 32hz. I like hip-hop/rap music and I want this system to pound!!!

Obviously there's no point in going with 12 inch subs that aren't going to be utilized right. However, the reason for 12's is because... they're 12's! Simply put... more surface area. And 12's hit lower and nicer. I like that booming low bass.

My car's a non-turbo. They're better. I've had a 93 turbo, fully loaded, leather, modded, and everything. Talk about a money pit that I'm glad I got out of.

Guess who... ;)

Bro, did you ever hear my car? That thing pounded and it had 10's. I know plenty about MR2's as you know and more about audio.

One thing you are forgetting here is to factor in the cars transfer function. There is not enough volume in that car NOR length for that matter to maximize the wavelengh you'll get from a 12". Not only that, but I assure you with even a 10" it makes for a very unpleasant ride. Ever been on a plane with some jackass behind you pounding his knee in the back of your seat? You are taking a lot of THEORY of 12's and applying it to a practical world that I assure you will end in dissapointment.

And I'll tell you this. You cut that bloddy car and I'll kill you myself!

Holy ... MIKE! Finally, somebody with an MR2 that can help me. I've been everywhere on net trying to get opinions about what to do with this car of ours. There simply isn't much information about setting up audio in mr2s. Anyways, did your car sell? That thing was beautiful.

In terms of my audio setup, I really don't want to hack up the storage boxes just for audio equipment. However, I do know that I want that nice bass that'll rock city blocks. Bass that hits low and rumbles. What would you suggest? There simply isn't much mounting depth that we can work with in our cars. A measly 5.5inches or so- maybe 6inches. And I can't justify spending money on shallow-mounts when other potentially better subs can be had for the same price.

So two 12" subs in a 2cube ported enclosures tuned to 32hz a no go in our car? What about a 1cube sealed? Right now i'm looking at these:

PIONEER TS-W1207D4 (TSW1207D4)
12" DUAL 4-Ohm PREMIER Series 1200W SUBWOOFER

Did you not listen to my car when you saw it last? Yes the car is sold, and to the PERFECT buyer. Got the new one already though, and this one is even nicer. In the middle of piecing a new system together for it now actually. Will work on it over the winter.

As for the subs, I have been outa things for a LONG time so I'm trying to research all over again. I went back to my tried and true with the last system and it hit hard. 2 of them would be MORE than enough I assure you. They work in small enclosures very well and the price isn't bad. They are Image Dynamics IDQ10's V.2. There is a new version 3 out. They look prettier but they don't spec out quite as well and looks like they want a larger box. I will likely go with another 10" of those and run CDT ES-620's up front casue I can get a killer deal on them at the moment.

Here is the new car.

That is the exact same colour that mine was, only available in 93 here in Canada. I had mine until 2005 I think it was, I just did not fit the thing anymore, could not fit my shoulders in the seat at all. It was a kick ass ride, nice cars boys!
