15" Mmats ProCast Sub Surround Cracked, Fixable?

Hey everyone, another question for you all.

I've been looking a a 15" Mmats ProCast Sub for awhile now locally, but now that I have the money to buy it, a problem has come up. Seems the guy hit a patch of black ice the other morning and went into a ditch. The Sub got tossed around, and in doing so, the surround got cracked. He has e-mailed Mmats to see if it can be repaired, and is waiting for a response. My question to you guys is, if it is fixable, and he gets it fixed, should I still buy it, or should I stay away because this repair was made? I really don't know myself, because I was sort of thinking that it might just be a straight forward replacement part and the sub would be fine. But then again, it may be that by cracking the surround and getting it repaired, the sub may never be the same again, or not last much longer, that kind of thing. Your responses are greatly appreciated, thanks.

It dosen't make much sense to say a surround is cracked; so I take it either the surround is torn, or the cone is cracked...

If the surround is torn it can be replaced without doing a whole recone, if the cone is cracked then it will definatly need a recone....... Im not sure if MMatts offers recones, but if they do you'll basically be getting a refurbished sub, and there is nothing really wrong with that IMO....

Yep, I'm going to look at the sub Friday. He's fixed the surround with speaker surround glue, and says it still holds up. I'll have a listen Friday and check it out. He's giving it to me for 50 bucks, so I figure it's definatly worth it, as a recone kit from MMats is only 60 bucks US. And he tells me his buddy had some MMatts gear, and when he needed a recone, he just called their offcie and they sent him a free one, he just had to pay for shipping. Just get someone to install the kit and your set I figure. What do you guys think?

sounds like its just a tear in the surround. If so the speaker is fine to play it just won't look pretty i guess. For $50.00 you can't go wrong. I mean it'll sound the same just won't look as good, and i think you really want this sub and you're excited. Its all good though, buy the sub now.lol

Yeah, I've been wantning to start building some system in my cav ever since I got it, and it's finally coming together. So you think it won't need a recone right away? To me, as long as it can push out some bass, it's fine by me lol.

you don't have to recone a sub because of a ter in the surround. I've seen subs with torn surrounds last years. You just need to patch up the tear with something. Like i said it won't be as pretty but should still bump good.

Yea, I don't really care about the look, as it's not a show car, and I just want some bass to rock the car. The guy I'm buying it off has another sub, JL I belive, which also had a tear in the surround. He said that happened a year ago, and after using the speaker surround glue, he's been running the required 500 RMS through it, and it still sounds just as good as before. Would anyone else like to comment? Looks like the only task now is getting that 18 inch box to fit in a trunk that has 17 inches of clearence...should have some fun there!

Well, I finally got it. Went and met up with the guy Friday night. He was running around 300 RMS from and Infinity Fourchannel, so it wasn't near it's potential. Hopped in the jeep, and he turned it up, man was I impressed. That Dual port box mates with it perfect, it was so retardly loud. It's in my room until I get my Kenwood 500 RMS for it, here's a pic:

You can see the splits in the surround, and the glue on them. What do you think?

looks like a good deal for $50

the speaker wire ran through the port is classic.....

Haha, nope, that's just me stuffing it in the port while I carried it in the house. Speaker wires go in throught the side of the box.
