1993 Civic Hatchback Suggestions

A friend of mine is redoing a '93 civic hatch with an Integra type R motor in it. He asked me to help him with the stereo setup but he would like to keep the car as JDM looking as possible. I believe in the front doors the hole is big enough for a 5 1/4" and the rear there's a large hole behind the panel where it had 6.5" but I believe you could fit a 6"x9". He wanted to keep the stock deck if possible and if he could avoid using an amp and just run the speakers off the deck. I told him it would sound awful.

I guess my question is what can I do to his car to make it sound as good as possible with the limits he's given me?

If I were to use an aftermarket deck running the speakers which would you guys recommend to use (must have an amber display to keep with the JDM dash look)?

What size speakers would you use?

C'mon you guys can't come up with anything? Would an alpine deck running 6.5" in the front doors and 6"x9" in the rear panels sound alright. We're not looking to get high levels of sound quality but to just make the the factory soudn better.

What the hell do you expect? You want some options for a '93 Civic but you've already answered all your questions.
Amber lit HU? Well that kinda narrows the field now doesn't it?!
You can only fit 5 1/4" and 6.5-6x9" in the rear? Well put the biggest you can fit in there especially if he doesn't want a sub which,oh yeah, he doesn't want an amp either so I guess that's out huh?! Guess you'll be looking for some speakers that work decent off of just deck power then right?

Wow, sorry I mean I didn't want to offend you guys, but thanks for the help anyways. Any opinions as to what manufacturer's to go with to create this mediocre system? Should I go with 2 or 3 way speakers? Will components up front sound like because they're not getting enough power from the deck?

6.5s fit in the doors and in the rear. I would recommending by two of the same coaxials and a small amp for the front ones. A 3lb 50x2 amp won't affect his performance but will make a huge difference in the sound of the front speakers.

In a basic system I'd stick to a good coaxial with a swivel tweeter rather than going for a mediocre component set.

So your saying that 6.5" speakers will fit in the front door holes (assuming the depth isn't too much)?

Is it really gonna be bad amping his rear 6"x9" speakers to get some bass out of them? I understand it will ruin the sound stage but we're talking about a guy who wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a legacy 4" speaker and a set of focal utopia 3 piece components.

And you would...?

Why not talk the guy into getting a decent deck amp/speakers and if he wants bass a sub
Its not gonna slow him down

Alpine high power deck(26 watts x4), most pre-2006 models are colour adjustable for amber(particularly the high power units). Alpine s-series co-axials sound great for the price, and are pretty loud off the deck power. You're set up!!!
