is 2 farad cap good enough to run

1000W monoblock + 150W speaker amp? :dunno:
right now i run 600W monoblock + 150W speaker amp and it seems to be okay. im just wondering if i should be looking into a bigger cap or not as new alternators + install = big creditcard bill :sly:
thanks!

I suggest not upgrading unless you see there is a problem once you get your new more powerfull equipement. And after upgrading and checking your grounds.

I am not a fan of caps.

caps suck add another battery then you'll see a difference

spend the money on the battery instead of a cap... don't forget the Big 3

eg0r 10-23-2006 03:04 PM

yeah sounds like the perfect time for big 3.
my battery is huge compared to other once i saw but do i really need bigger battery/alternator/cap?!?! I rather not spend money if i dont have to.

does any1 know what 2 farad supports as far as power is concerned?

You don't really need any cap. But the general rule of thumb is 1farad capacitance for every 1000W of power, so you don't kneed another one unless you go above 2000W, but they aren't really nesecary at all, but they will assist in dynamic music, when current is needed rapidly. Before you spend money on a cap, upgrade your wiring and big 3 for sure!

If you're electrical isn't strong enough to support your amps need a cap will do no good and in reality will make things worse as it will be one more drain on the system.
At the moment although your amps demands will cause added strain on your alternator (shortening its lifespan) it may be strong enough to supply what you are currently running power wise. As stated up there you're best at this point to make your stock electrical as efficient as possible by starting out with the "big 3" upgrade. From there if you find you have dimming issues a bigger alternator is the way to go.
A cap has its place in car audio but not until the electrical system is already strong enough to support the extra max current demands.
