Question

I like car audio.

I am into car audio.

I am no expert on car audio at the electronic level.

Hence the question:

I currently have two 4 ohm subs hooked to the amp.
I notice from manuals that had I bought 2 ohm subs, they would be getting more power??

My rookie question is, how does this happen???

You wouldn't necessarily be getting more power.

Your 2 4Ohm subs are probably wired to 2 Ohms. (2 4 Ohm subs can be wired to 2 Ohms or 8 Ohms)..

If you had 2 2Ohm subs you would wire them to either 1 Ohm or 4 Ohms.

So, now that you know how you can wire it you need to look at your amplifier.

If your amplifier is rated for 1 Ohm operation then you will usually get more power out of it. (some amps are made to do the same power and different Ohm loads)

If your amplifier is only rated for 2 Ohms and you try and put a 1 Ohm load to it, you can damage it.

Btw, at the top if this "General" section there are some GREAT sites on Car Audio theory. If my explanation isn't thorough enough you can check those out and I'm sure you'll find all the info you could ever want, and a lot more!!
