3 or 4 which way to go

Hey all

I have been asked by a friend of mine to do a system in his avalanche and he wants all kenwood excelon which is fine with me but I have a question. He has asked me if it would be better to go with 3 12" drivers with a 1500 watt peak amp on each OR go with 4 12" drivers in pairs on 2400 watt peak amps.

I am really not sure what to tell him on this one. I am wondering from an sq stand point which would be better. I am pretty sure that spl wise the 4 would be the way to go but I want to get some ideas here as well.

Any one have any thoughts?

Thumbs up

If he's sticking with the Excelon line I would put 4 of the KFC-W3012 in his truck with an X1200M for each pair.....power handling and delivery match up very well.....

Sounds like your buddy wants to be a 139.9 bass racer.....

When you go to get the amps make sure they are the upgraded version....there was an issue with the P.S. in the first round of those amps that caused them to crap out way too easy....Kenwood released the repair parts to the warranty depot for Eastern Canada 2 weeks ago and the guy is getting caught up with the backlog as we speak.

Any amps that have been shipped in the last 2 weeks from Kenwood have got the parts in them already.

HTH

What kind of SQ below 50Hz are you looking for? I would be asking if I should be buying 10's - 12's - or 15's, not how many drivers make it better SQ I believe SQ as you put it will depend on the way you incorporate the subs into the system, not how many drivers you use. Hope this helps, even if I mocked you a bit , sorry.

the more the better.

for lets say u play the bass at 120dbs.. 3 or 4 cones will play at lower excursion witch means sq will be better cause there will be less mechanical noise from the woofers.. compared to lets say 1 12 or 15 with same power and playing at 120dbs again that single woofer will have alot more excursion = more mechanical noise and means less sq.

thats the way i see it and someone might change that. but hey its a learning experience right.. but i still say 4 would be awsome and yes ^^^ headroom is ALWAYS better for those basshead moments that most ppl get

You can hear the mechanical excursion of a woofer over the 120dB of music as you say in the cabin of a vehicle? You my friend has extraordinary hearing to put it mildly

I can hear mechanical excursion from a sealed box in a hatchback playing lowlows because at that point you aren't hearing "sound", just vibrations (like 20ish hz), it's possible to hear some mechanical noise at low frequencies. Maybe they aren't at 120dB though.

In a trunk... no, you can't hear it.

For the record this is not going to be a hardcore sq system if it was I would tell him to take out a second mortage and go with focal lol. We are trying to figure out what will sound good and the amps are the real question for me more then anything.

Its going to be either 3 drivers wtih 4500 watts peak or 4 drivers with 4800 peak I am just not sure if there is a real advantage to having a dedicated amp for each driver.

As for what BigRed was saying we are looking at with a pair of the x1200m's or 3 of the xr-1s amps. The subs we were going to use where the KFC-XW1222D. I thought those subs would match up well with either set up but if you think other wise please let me know as I don't want to build this system and have it suck lol.

Personally I think your friend is making a huge mistake. It appears he is trusting product selection and installation to someone who thinks PEAK numbers mean anything...

I am aware that peak numbers don't count for much I am just using them for an example to get the idea out there.
