4-Channel Amp question

Hi, I need a new 4-channel amp to go with my 2x Pioneer premier TS-D720C (60W RMS) and 2x TS-D702P (60W RMS).

I have 3 choices that are about the same price (250$):

-Alpine MRP-F300 (Per channel into 4 ohms: 50W x 4 (1% THD))
-Pioneer GM-6400F (60 Watts x 4, at 4 ohms <= 1% THD+N)
-JBL GTO-1004 (100W RMS x 4 Channels at 4 Ohms)

Or should I go with something else in the same price range?

My HU is a Pioneer double din AVH-P4000DVD, With the 4 speakers listed above, 1x 12" Type R with the Alpine MRP-M1000

Thanks

The JBL seems to have extra power on hand. That's always a bonus. The Pioneer is rated the same as the Pioneer speakers. Maybe the Xover controls might be the deciding factor? I'm leaning JBL but haven't heard the GTO series.

Are you going to be adding a sub in the future? IIRC the AVHP4000 has two preouts only so the ideal amp should have a pass through rca as well, this will allow you to easily expand with a sub amp in the future.

Good call Rob! Didn't think of that.

Not sure if I can get what you're sayin, but I don't need another sub thats for sure. The 12" type R with the MRP-1000 is more than enough for my 4x pioneer premier.

Thanks

It means that the cd player you have only has a front / rear or front / sub preout. If you are looking for front / rear with fading abilities, you are going to need a 4 channel amp that has a pass through rca to go to your existing sub amplifier and then you will need to add a dedicated level control to run the sub bass. The sub out control on the head unit will not function if you are after front / rear fader controls. If you could care less about fader controls and want to continue to use the sub level control as built into the deck then a 4 channel amp that has a 2 or 4 input selector is what you will need and then you will set the gains to provide the amount of fill you will require.

To sum in up you either get front / rear fade and no sub control OR you get front only with sub control. You cannot get both.

Right now with my old 4 channels MTX Thunder 4244, i don't have front/rear fader control, but i have sub control. I think it's just ok like that.
Its 2 or 4 input selector is set to 4 channel, so i gess this works just fine.

How do i know if the amp I'm looking for has a 2-4 input selector? I can't see anything like that in the specs. Should I look for the 4/3/2 channel designation? Will the amps i was looking for do the trick?

Could I use a 2 channel full range amp at like 120W RMS per channel?

thanks

The 4/3/2 designation just means that the channels are bridgeable. You can use any of the amps you've listed.

Great.
So anybody knows what amp I should get? Do I really have to make a choice based on the # of watt RMS and x-over control? Isn’t there any chance that I could blow my speakers with 100W RMS / channel or can I fix this by setting the gain at 60%? I would’ve thought that the alpine would have much more better sound quality than the Pioneer or JBL… If I use 60W of the 100W available in the JBL amp (60%), will these 60W deliver a better sound quality than the 60W from the Pioneer Amp (100%)? If I had to choose between the Alpine and Pioneer, should I go with the brand name (Alpine) or the numbers (Pioneer)?

Sorry lots of questions
Thanks for your help

I think as for SQ they are all about the same. The extra power from the JBL will help you to keep your gains down. The gains ARE NOT a volume control. It just sets the starting point for the volume. The gains should always be set to match your decks RCA output level or lower to help eliminate clipping.
