4 gauge crimp tool? Where to buy?

Title says it all, where do I buy a 4 gauge crimp tool in Toronto? Is there any way to crimp without such a tool? Called homedepot/canadian tire, they don't have it!

Doing my install on sat, so I need it before then, otherwise I'd order online...

Thx.

Vice, hammer and chisel, hammer, auto electric shop,....vice and solder have always worked for me.

defro13 03-12-2009 04:04 PM

greenlee makes a crimptool that will do what you want to do....

Killer_klown187 03-12-2009 04:21 PM

I just use a hammer and a floor(concrete) has yet to let me down!! screw the crimp tool, money not so well wasted

Father Yuli 03-12-2009 04:42 PM

hammer? you should be able to crimp it with plyers.

Killer_klown187 03-12-2009 04:54 PM

Yuli, im surprised you didn't say your bare hands!! lol jk

danyman 03-12-2009 05:15 PM

princess auto has some if i remember right. aint cheap for 4g down to 0guage. over 100 i beleive it was

a vice and hammer is good enough or a floor and hammer

Father Yuli 03-12-2009 05:22 PM

try it with your bare hands. i do it.

Wow, thanks for all of the reply's guys. It really does seem like a waste to spend $50 to crimp like 6 connections...

How do you use a vise and hammer? Can someone elaborate? I've used plyers before, but they don't exert enough force for bigger terminals.

Can you use a vise to close the wire all together?

I don't have a vice, maybe a small clamp one, will that do the job?

Thanks for the tips guys, saving me a bundle!

I use my teeth! I've been brushing with that enamel hardening tooth paste for 40 years now...it works!

And here I thought you just used them to strip the insulation off your power wire......:dunno:

I've used vise grips lots of times, squeeze 1 side enough to grip the wire and then do the other side.....haven't had one pull apart lately......:ohwell:

Killer_klown187 03-12-2009 07:10 PM

hardening enamel you say? hmmmm i gotta try that one :D..I strip alot of wires with my teeth(love the fake teeth)

I was at AA Electronics at Matheson and Dixie the other day and they had some nice 4ga connector that you can screw on...24 kt gold plate

digs 03-12-2009 10:39 PM

Wendel: ring connectors? That's what I'm looking for so I can do the big 3 upgrade. Hopefully they don't come off ?? I will be soldering as well for insurance.

Big: If I'm using ring connectors, and I don't have a vice grip, can I just squeeze at the middle point (where the metal sticks out) using a c clamp + a hammer?

Wendel17 03-13-2009 09:33 AM

Yes they are ring connectors with a nice thick collar with an allan screw. If you are doing big three why arent you using 0 guage? If you are going to go through the hassle you might as well

digs 03-13-2009 10:04 AM

Cost and it's harder to manage thick wire, than thinner wire. Based on the power charts I've looked up, for our system 4 gauge will do the job.

Thanks for the tip about the crimpless connectors, makes life much easier!

Wendel17 03-13-2009 10:46 AM

No problem. I encountered the same problem before and when I priced the crimpers it was ridiculous. If you can't find enough I have 1 of these connectors that I didn't use and that you could have if you wanted to come get it.

Thanks man, I'll probably be running back & forth b/w the shops this weekend..haha. How much do they go for? I need 6 of them.

Wendel17 03-13-2009 11:01 AM

I can't remember for sure. I actually bought mine a long time ago and I just can't remember what was on the package at the store the other day. Probably 5 or 7 bucks though. At that place anyways. There are two other stores in that strip plaza also where you may find them. Sayal and RTC Electronics. I got some nice Phoenix Gold Speaker wire at RTC the other day. AA has all sorts of differet connectors and cabling and automotive lighting if your lookin for any of that.

digs 03-13-2009 11:51 AM

Nice, will check them out sat morning. I have speaker wire 14 gauge from monoprice, so I'm good with that.

Anything you can do that will ensure a solid connection is good......I seem to hit my fingers more than anything else when armed with a hammer......:smilie_au
