My car (grand am) has factory 4 x 6 and I noticed jbl has a pair that would fit the spot. Any other modles out there that are worth checking out? I wil be adding kick panels later so these will need to compliment those

My recommendation would be to do what seems to work well in many cars.. put midbass in your doors and midrange in the kicks...

I don't like 4x6s or 3.5s cause most don't have much output... and putting midrange/highs in the door firing at your ankles isnt going to stage very well...

What I would do is get a 5.25 or 6.5 mid only, and run a dome tweeter with a single cap as a crossover...

Later when you upgrade you can put midrange in the kicks and run the door speakers as midbass only...

The doors do not fit those sizes and seems lik much work to try and fit otherwise and what do you mean by run a dome tweeter with a single cap as a crossover?

Sorry, forgot to mention... it isn't a very big deal to make adaptor plates... a good shop should be able to make em in 10-15min... (or do em yourself)

I was suggesting you use a 'bass-blocking' cap for the tweeter instead of buying a component set... but I guess it depends on how you wanted to run everything once you add kickpanels...

You could always get components and use the crossovers on midrange in the kickpanles then go active cross over from your amp on the midbass...

I agree somewhat with Haunz - it is easy to make a wooden plate to fit a better speaker - 5¼ or even a 6½" - much better sound that a 4x6 speaker. If its in the budget - go components !!

There are also prefab adapter plates that can be had at most Futureshop locations or audio stores if you ask for them.
The thing I don't like about them is they are made of plastic. I would recommend you make a pair out of MDF. It really is not too difficult to modify your door to make a 5-6" speaker fit.
Check the Member Pages at Sounddomain for soem Grand Am installs and you can likely find soemone who's posted pictures to basically give you the walk through of how to do it.

IMO, don't waste your money on 4x6's.
