6.5" Speakers that can handle some bass
 

I am looking for some 6.5" Speakers that can handle some bass. I am currently running a pair of older MB Quart Q-Line comps and am amazed by the highs and mids but they cant handle any bass at all. A bud of mine has some Type-R's that I was quite impressed with but the sound quality for the higher end is definitly lacking. Obviously they arent there to work as subs but I want something to fill some of the lower frequencies before the sub kicks in.

This is not a WTB, I am just looking to get opinions of speakers (brand and model).

You should look for a mid bass driver instead of a midrange!

Midbass drivers
 

I agree with theboy: you should look for midbass drivers. These are typically a pair of 6.5" woofers that are crossed over so that they only play the midbass frequencies (80 - 250 Hz). Typically, you add them in parallel to your existing set of front speakers. But make sure that the amplifier you're using can handle a 2 ohm load.

Most companies offer separate, dedicated midbass drivers. Some call it an "add-a-woofer system" or something to that effect.

I happen to know for a fact that MB Quart offers a midbass pair in the Q line, the Premium line, and the Reference line. They call in their "Add-A-Woofer-System". It basically means that you get a 6.5" driver with a low-pass crossover. This filter sends everything ~ 250 Hz and down through this woofer. Compare this to a normal 6.5" component set where the woofer plays everything ~ 3500 Hz and down.

Once again, most companies offer similar products, so shop around. You said you liked Alpine's type Rs on the low end. Well, Alpine also has the SPX-17MB (6.5" midbass driver only). Again, this is a pair of dedicated midbass drivers for playing those frequencies only.

I have the RCE-164 reference mid-bass and they really add so much to the overall sound.

Definitely worth the extra bucks.

it should be noted that just adding in another speaker can cause for more issues that it solves, most notably, phase and timing issues that can cause image smear amongst other things. as well you cant just add them in parallel, you will have to cross them over, either electronically or passively, just adding them in parallel with out for-thought and planning is not good

it's hard to tell in the pic - but I'm using Cerwin Vega 6.5" mids
that match upto a 1" dome tweeter at the top pf the door panel

before you start swapping or adding drivers you should look at deadening your doors.
