Hello, I have a pair of Blaupunkt 6x9's. I was wondering if it would help get some bass out of them if I put them into boxes. I've been told by friends that I should do it, but on looking on the net I found a few people saying that all 6x9s are meant for open air. But I made a really sketchy temporary box and it sounded nice.

So what are the opinions/ experience/ knowledge here?

Long ago I had some Pioneer 6x9's in some boxes. I thought they sounded better free-air then in the sealed box.

Better off amping them if they can handle it...

 

Most speakers like 6x9's were designed to operate in the trunk of a vehicle. The rear parcel shelf isolated the front of the speaker from the back so that you got a great deal of bass response out of them. If you do not isolate the front of the speaker from the back, then do not expect to get bass response out of them.

That said, installing them in a box solves this problem. The downfall is that the smaller the box is, the more limited the bass output will be. If you cannot isolate the front of the speaker from the back, put them in a box and make the boxes as large as you can (within reason) to get some respectable sound out of them.

 

FWIW, moving the 6x9's in my PU from those small 'wedge' boxes into larger enclosures made a big difference. I was aiming for around .5 cu ft net (each of course) but under-shot and over stuffed a bit.

It was good box building practice if nothing else.

You'll get more bass by adding subs and amp.

No, really, 6x9's are made for best bass free-air. The trick with free-air is to have the rear of the speaker in the trunk, TOTALLY sealed from the interior of the car.

 

soubd is supposed to come from the front, if you have the money drop the rear speakers and get a little sub set up. If you decide to keep the 6x9's you could try making a little port in that box.
