Has anyone used 6x9's in a rear deck as midbass speakers. I was gonna try putting 8" subs back there but i determined they are too big. So now I'm thinking about getting a beefy set of 6x9's, disconecting the tweeter and using them as midbass drivers. I know this sounds really hokey, i'm actually kinda embarressed to suggest it but i'm running outa options. Can anyone suggest a 6x9 with impressive bass response? Thanks

Why not just get a 6.5" midbass driver that was meant to do the job?

defro13 04-24-2004 09:26 PM

fat whacker smart, listen to him, dont question the wisdom of the fattest of all whackers, cuz there are none fatter

JayDawg Supafly 04-24-2004 09:43 PM

I was thinking that i'm not gonna get enough output outa 6.5". I'm just trying to get the biggest surface area possible. Most midbass drivers are constructed for shallow depth situations. I've got a little bit of room so I figured i might get more output out of a 6x9. Kenwood makes a dual cone 6x9 that thumps pretty good. They are dirt cheap so I was gonna pick up a set for experimentation and then invest in a good set once I determined if it's gonna sound good or not. What 6.5" driver would you suggest?

Peter Barry 04-24-2004 09:48 PM

Do you want a mid bass or a co-ax mid range?

If you truley want a "mid bass" driver, I would buy whatever your budget can allow. Alot of companies make them, its just a matter of choosing. It sounds to me you just want some rear fill, which any set of co-ax's will give you.

IMO stay away from 6x9's, go with a good co-ax or mid bass driver.

JayDawg Supafly 04-24-2004 10:09 PM

I don't want rear fill. I'm trying to avoid it. I have no room to put midbass up front where they should be. The rear deck is the only place I can fit them. I'm on a fairly limited budget. The only midbass driver I've looked at is the kicker RMB6. What other drivers should I look at? I don't have room to build an enclosure under the rear deck so they have to be IB. I've got two 12" type R's in the truunk so i'm a little worried that they are gonna mess up the midbass.

We did a set of Cadence ZX-6 mids in my brother's doors of his truck, an 1986 Toyota. http://www.cadencesound.com/image-bi...ducts/ZX6M.jpg

Even running off of deck power we got unbelievable mid and bass response. It almosted picked up on the lowest bass drops in some hip hop tracks also. These were running full range. When we amped them, they sounded even better. Probably about $120 a pair. Pretty deep though, 2 3/4" depth.

Back in the day I had a few friends who had 6X9 "subs". I know one guys set was Sony, not sure what the other set was, but they thought they rocked, They had no real low extension, only probably played down to about 50-60 hz, those are about the only ones I could think of that might make a good midbass.

What speakers are you using for the front stage? Where are they located? Let's start there before adding more drivers.

JayDawg Supafly 04-24-2004 11:22 PM

Alpine 5 1/4 Type R. In pods on the doors. Pods are opened to the inside of the door. Door is sealed and sound deadened. I'm running a rockford 350s. My plan is to add some midbass drivers and run them parrallel off the 350s with some homemade 12db passive crossovers. I want to HP the 5 1/4 at about 200-300. LP the midbass at about 300. And then use the active crossover on the amp to hp at about 70-80. I got no room for kicks or else i would have put the 5 1/4 in kicks. 6 1/2" in doors and called it a day. Ultra Linear makes a 6x9 sub, i bet that is a fantastic piece of harware

I think I would focus on making a nice enclosure for your Type R's in your doors. You will get 100% better midrange when they are actually in an enclosure. It doesn't have to be big, just enough to call it an enclosure. Right now your loosing alot of deffinition from running them IB in the door.

Bigmike216 04-24-2004 11:53 PM

I believe tang-Band makes a 6x9 sub...

JayDawg Supafly 04-25-2004 12:12 AM

I had the pods seeled originally. defro conviced me to open them up into the doors. When they were sealed they were quite a bit punchier but had no lower bass what so ever. They also had a nasty effiency spike around the 300Hz area, didn't sound to good. I would like to build a ported enclosure or a larger sealed but that is impossible without destroying the door panel. I've pretty much done what I can with the font speakers. This is why I have a bad feeling about putting 6.5 midbass in the rear deck IB. I don't think they are gonna give me very much output.

defro13 04-25-2004 06:49 AM

what about a larger midrange/midbass in your doors maybe going to a 6.5", unless the sealed box is big enough you will pretty much always get bad sound, so ib probobly best here unless you plan on some major mods, why not just get a bigger front speaker. just an idea

JayDawg Supafly 04-25-2004 09:00 AM

The thing is I prefer the sound of a mid when it's crossed over fairly high. I usually crossover my mids at about 200-250. I prefer the sound of a 5 1/4 over 6 1/2. I think I'll experiment with a cheap set of 6x9's or 6.5's in the rear deck and if it sounds like poo no big deal. If it sounds good i'll invest in a proper set of 6.5" midbass. Thanks for all the help guys, i'll let you know how it turns out.

Peter Barry 04-25-2004 10:39 AM

Don't take this the wrong way, but why did you even bother asking our opinions? You seemed to be pretty stuck on your whole 6x9 thing no matter what advice you recieved. No offence, but I think the money spent on 6x9's is a true waste. That money can be put towards a good set of dedicated mid bass drivers, which from what you described, is what you need. Just my thoughts.

JayDawg Supafly 04-25-2004 12:06 PM

I don't plan on using the 6x9's permenantly. I've got an old set of JBL's that i'll plop in there. I wanna find out things like if my image is gonna be affected, if the subs will affect them in an IB. Once I determine those things i'll go out and get a proper set of midbass speakers. I don't want to shell out $200 for a good set of speakers just to bring them home, spend a bunch of time customizing my rear deck and then finding out that my image is destroyed. I'd rather waste a little money than a lot. I value your guys opinions, i just have never used a midbass driver before and would like to know which drivers are good and which are bad. Is the kicker RMB6 good? Is the image dynamics good? Audiobahn? Or any others that i might not know about. Thanks

DaZZ 04-25-2004 12:28 PM

kicker used to make a set of 6x9 midbasses... not sure if it was part of the competition or resolution line thou...

BigRedGuy 04-25-2004 04:24 PM

I have been happy with the sound out of my Orion MB6's for several years now. I have an extra set of the MB8's as well, still waiting to use those ones somewhere.... :D

I believe Orion is still making them....

I myself will be using 6x9's for mid bass.

2 8's AKA Jeepbeats 04-25-2004 06:26 PM

The Cadence ones I posted above are killer, and if you can't find them locally, I know of an online place that deals with them also. http://www.aralex.com/ should be able to find a local dealer for you, hopefully.

JayDawg Supafly 04-25-2004 06:29 PM

Do you know what the price tag is on them?

There is a place in the US www.audiooutfitter.com that quoted me either $22.64 US each or for a pair, I have to double check, which is a decent deal if you can't find them locally. There is a shop in the Fraser Valley http://www.musicworx.ca/ that should be able to get them I think.

GrizZz 04-26-2004 03:04 PM

*shrug* Nothing wrong with my 3-way 6x9's... they're the big 300 watt Kenwood Excelon's... I've got a set in the front doors and another going in a box above my middle seat...

They sound awesome, picking up full range. I notice the difference with them set at full range, or cutting 40, 60, or 80 Hz out (using my HU's built in crossover's). Currently I run the fronts at 40, but that'll change when I add the rears. And rather than cutting the tweeters out for the rears, I'll be running them through an external XO that'll cut the highs out. Or just get speaker coils/caps, that'd be the cheap way to do it.

defro13 04-26-2004 04:05 PM

the rear midbass will most certainly smear image, and localize sound to the rear, 2 very undesirable things when trying to get good sound, your best bet it to upgrade the 5.25" to a 6.5", there are a tone of amazing 6.5" midrange/bass speaker that will yield great midrange and great midbass, btw the typr r 6.5" isnt one of them, good luck

JayDawg Supafly 04-27-2004 12:52 AM

Thanks for all the input guys, I think i'll take your advice and not bother with the midbass in the rear. Another thing I didn't think of was if I put speakers back there I'm gonna completely seal off the trunk from the cab. I think that would probably hurt my SPL. Thanks again for the help

defro13 04-27-2004 07:23 AM

pro noblem

Paul Niwranski 04-27-2004 12:50 PM

Midbass in the rear will not always destroy your front imaging. It is challenging but there have been many successful cars with rear mounted midbass.

JayDawg Supafly 04-27-2004 02:35 PM

Is it all in the eq and crossover settings?

Paul Niwranski 04-27-2004 11:04 PM

xover, level setting and vibration control
