700 watts to alpine type r, good or bad idea?
 

an 12 "alpine type r that is dual voice 4 ohm per coil has a 500 rms recommended continuous rating, my amp puts out 700 rms at 2 ohms , do yo think the sub could handle the extra 200 watts, or would the coils burn up quickly?

I was running over 4000 to 2of them.

I make it my point to overpower rms rating on all speakers. My calculation is normally 1.5 times over, so 500 rating would get 750. Always loved the results.

As long as you're aware of what you're doing, then you should have no problems. Unfortunately, two different users can have very different results when over powering the same equipment...it's all in the user!

Do you mean a noob setting it up compared to an expert or just luckiness?

what should i look out for, and avoid doing?

I'm currently running about 900W into my 12" Type-R dual 2 ohm setup at 4 ohm daily driver.

I bought a new amp to put even more power into it, and to prepare for a second Type R down the road.
New amp should put out up to 1500W RMS into 1 12" or 3000W into 2 12"s.

Make sure the amp does not clip.

it means being careful with the volume knob, and not pushing the subs for excessive amounts of time at full power with bass heavy tracks. Remember, there's no magic, the voice coil is rated for a certain temperature for certain amount of time...exceed the ratings too much and too long, and you get a fried sub...hmmm quizno's has toasted...could this be the next thing???
