Depends on the tools you got.

At minimum I'd want to have a brad nailer. I don't like ****ing around with screws. Crimps to hold the construction too.
A table saw would help too or as an alternative, getting the mdf cut at HD/Rona may turn out very good, depending on the mood of the guy at that time of day .
I'm sure with mdf + glue + small stuff and carpet you can be under $60-80 range to pull it off.

if you were to buy one, you'd do to your nearest reputable local shop. It won't be $80 though.

you need at least manufacturer's box size recommendation or t/s specs of the driver to model out yourself.

I recommend that you play with winsd just with any size so you'll find out a few things.

LinearTeam

there's bassbox pro, but i think winisd is easier to pick up.

For an 8" driver in a low-power application, why not try building your own enclosure? 8" prefab boxes are uncommon, and most shops don't stock them though could order one from hammerhill etc... You mentioned a 220 watt alpine amp...do you mean a MRP-T220? If so, that's only 140w RMS @ 4ohm mono, or 2x50w RMS. It's a small amp, the bare minimum for a subwoofer application, however it should be adequate for your Polk 8".

I'm not familiar with the Polk woofer, but it should accommodate a very small enclosure (basically big enough to hold the speaker itself)

.5-.8 cubes should do the trick in a sealed application. It won't be very loud, but if you just want some low end...should be ok. Just a note, a 12" type r Alpine sub just needs .85 cubes sealed to sound very good, and it gets loud with 500 watts...just thought I'd mention it incase you have the space.
