80 days to make a custom sub box/amp rack?? Really

this is a heads up to all interested.
Be for-warned this is a review of my last dealings with Selective Sound over the coarse of 80days to have a custom midgate with a sub box slash amp rack made for my 04 chevy avalanche, and it will be long.
im sure Davis will read and make his comment/s on this, as he is entitled to do
"Midgate" = a hinged wall between the cabin and the box of the truck

on Mar 4/11 i went to Selective Sound to talk with Davis about making my midgate box for my truck and to set a start date. this is after having several conversations about it in person over the coarse of a year. gave a deposit to show my commitment.

Mar 19/11 i took the truck in as appointed

Mar 22/11 called to see how things were going and informed Davis i needed my truck for a long weekend in Montreal. was informed that work had not started yet as he had no time, and his main custom builder was not at the shop full time (student). he also stated that he had taken some time to take measurements so he could start.
hmm why would someone commit to take on a custom job, and set a start date if one does not have the man power, or time to do said job?? not only set a start date but to state that it should only take a week, maybe two to complete!

Mar 24/11 decided to take truck early since no work was being done anyway..

Mar 30/11 returned the truck to Davis. asked if he started work yet. was informed he had not and that he needed the truck.
well hey now, what was the statement about taking measurements all about??
Davis stated he ordered the wood for my project and had it cut in half for delivery. now hold on to your seat cause here comes another kicker!! said wood delivery arrived and was deemed useless because the midgate... wait for it... is over 4ft in width...
hmmm see Mar 22/11 above.. no other comment needed
at this time he stated he could not start until the new order of wood comes in, and he needed his custom builder to start the project. he also stated he would be in full time next week when exams were finished.

Mid week of April 24/11 i stopped by the shop to see how things were going, and to my amazement.. nothing. he was waiting for a friend to drop by so they could go pick up the wood for my project. this friend had a truck!
ok now i give my head a shake and wonder. what happened to the "wood order being delivered". i keep my cool and my mouth shut about it and say. "you know you have a truck sitting right there that holds a 4x8 sheet of stock in it fully covered and protected. if you had called me and asked i would have told you to use it" to which he replies "i need someone to go with me to help". "ok i say, ill go with you. we can go now and get the wood"... "ok he says" a few mins later we were at the big box picking up the wood.
wow now this can get started, right!

please forgive me but i dont remember exact dates after this. plus its 1:30am as i type this. i had been finishing what should have been completed and what i payed for.. keep reading it will all make sense. I Promise!

another week goes by and i drop in to see if they are almost done. i have not heard anything at this point and im in the area. still no work on my project. well not entirely true. Davis did remove my factory midgate and proceeded to drill out all the rivets that hold the main locking brace plate at the top of the midgate. only to discover that it was not necessary and all he had to do was remove the upper bolts.. Damage done! Davis states at this time that his custom builder will definitely be back full time next week and for sure they will start on my project.. with permission i do some planned needed work on my truck while its there. stuff that i had planned to do once i got it back, but seeing as i was not getting it back anytime soon i figured i would use the time and space of his shop..

now, in this time Davis did manage to find time and man power to complete three other custom jobs. jobs that were started after my project was to start. one of which was for the owner of this very board..

week after week of this. excuse after excuse. promise after promise..
man im tired!!

somewhere in between all the lame *** excuses they did manage to get a midgate made up...

well its been another week so i drop in with a friend. a friend who wants some work done (scheduled work) we were late for his 10am appointment so we waited to see if they would get to his truck. in the mean time we do some more needed planned work on mine. again with permission.
we waited all day. only to find out that they would not get to it.. so we make another appointment and leave. btw still no progress on mine.

another week and finally, a plan on a board with measurements for the box.. there was some messaging going back and forth about the specs for the sub. and what tuning i was after. this is all info that was spelled out when i left him my truck. info that was written down.. better to make sure though right? i worked on my truck some more. have to rewire for the new amp, second batt and an HO alt to power it all.

i spent a few days where i could doing this electrical upgrade. all in preparation for the new sub. i ran dedicated wire from the second batt to the amp. when it was all said and done i informed the custom builder that the wires were ready for him to wire the amp. that i had left enough wire for the amp to be placed on the passenger side of the truck with the sub on the drivers side. being that the amp had the power wire inputs on the right. this configuration would place the power connections in the middle of the midgate..

more excuses and wasted time (my time) and we all know that "time is money" ahh but who gives a rats **** about my time, my gas going back and forth from downtown toronto to missingsauga?

May 29/11 with very little progress happening (took 3 weeks to make a box and mount it) and no end in sight i finally had to put an end to it.. i informed Davis that this could not and would not continue. i needed a finish date, and i want my truck back. i have been very patient up to this point, even joked about how long it was taking with his employees through out this ordeal. "saturday" meaning june 4/11 it would be complete. "i promise, i really want you to have your truck back". i state "ok saturday it is. finished or not its leaving. if its not finished be ready to put it back to stock with return of my money".

june 4/11 i arrive with a friend. upon arrival my hu is getting a new install bracket (part of the job). i start to look at my new midgate/sub/amp rack with my amp and sub all mounted nice an purdy! then im told they didnt run wires into the amp rack well "because we didnt know how to get the wires in there. so we left it for you" WTF... oh and youtr wires are too short to reach the amp.. "well that would be because you put the amp on the wrong side of the truck" i said.. "well we had it together before we noticed and well....." and well. WTF... ok now im starting to fume. i mean really fume... 2.5 months they have my truck and not once did anyone say they didnt have a clue how to run wire to this thing. let alone put any thought as to how?????? while figuring how it could be done. i stop to see how the reinstall of the hu was going. as i glance up on my dash i notice something is missing.. while doing me "a favor detailing my truck for pickup" they broke my light sensor in the middle of the dash and didnt even notice.
so lets recap shall we:
drilled out the rivets on my stock midgate. was suppose to be repaired by them.. not done
took forever to build a custom midgate with a custom sub box and amp rack attached. custom being the key word here. as a custom job they as a professional install and custom store are to plan and build the project as outlined by the customer. they are being payed to think about all aspects of the project. its not like they didnt have the time to do it right and do it well.
the bed liner sprayed on the back end is sparatic and leaves wood exposed to the elements. this is mdf we are talking about here. the trim work is not fitted well. again planning is key here. the box while built to specs is too tall (rubs at the top when opened) and too deep. they had plenty of room behind the amp rack that could have been used if it was planned.
i had to spend more money and several hours to rewire the power for the amp as they didnt listen and do as i asked.. again planning. i planned, they didnt.
oh btw we ran 10ga wire for the sub as thats all we had, is that ok"? Me. um
we are putting 2000 wrms into this sub do you think 10ga is enough"? Davis "yeah i think it will be ok". im no pro here but even i know you need atleast 8ga for that kind of power..
planning..

i have to stop at this point. i just cant take it any more! its like it never ends.

i dont know if any this makes sense at all, but for some it will. i am going to the show today in oshawa. so if anyone wants to see what 2.5 months of custom work at Selective Sound looks like come see me.. im the one who is prob still wiring up my white chevy avalanche in the parking lot

specs for those interested
12" SSA Xcon in a custom 2.75cu in box tuned to 31hz
Hertz HPD1 amp in a custom amp rack on the wrong side of the truck rewired to fit
you might be able to hear it if i get it finished...

ps i need all the help i can get to tune this beast and my front stage please. pretty please. pretty pretty please..

thanks for listening and for letting me vent. its 2:50am now and i need to sleep.

dont think i will ever use or endorse Selective Sound again

Yeah that's too long, it should have taken 2 weeks max if you were first in line. Leaving the wiring for you is just LAZY!

Everything focus's on one thing : ORGANIZATION or a lack of it. Frankly I am embarrassed for them because they probably have better capabilities... I wonder if they know their shortfalls?

im sure they are aware john. Davis knew full well i was not impressed when i stated so just before i left the shop. My friend who drove me there was completely disgusted with the job and what i was being told by Davis, wiring being one of them.
i spent a half day yesterday and from 10am this morn till 1:30 with the help of another friend to get the wiring almost done.. needs some cleaning. i also discovered that a trim piece had to be scrapped because it was made too small to fit around the amp and too large to fit in the opening it rests in. this trim panel could not be save because it was vinyl-ed. vinyl that i supplied.. oh and a corner was chipped out during its making and attempted to be filled with bondo. needles to say it let go along with the vinyl around it.
there is more damage to my truck and more bad things to say about the workmanship but i really just need to try to put this behind me. its my fault really for be patient and understanding.
its frustrating that i actually payed him what i did. i will find out what a new light sensor is worth tomorrow. if its high i will go back to him and get him to cover the cost. as for another panel they ripped out of my truck at the beginning of this ordeal. it was priced over $1000 to replace.. the damage done to my truck surpasses what i payed them to do the work.

spoke with Davis today and he is willing to redo the job.. i have given 2 weeks, with 1 full weekend.
i am on call for the next week and have to be in my work truck everywhere i go. this starts today and ends monday of next week. since i dont drive my truck through the week this gives them all of next week.

Davis is a stand up guy and i know he does amazing work. i feel i got him at a really bad time business and personally.. this is not the first time i have dealt with Davis. everyone makes mistakes and he is willing to correct his.

i ask all who read this to please keep in mind that i wrote it in haste, while pissed off. in retrospect i should have cooled down and talked with him.

Why is it so bad that he wrote this? Job is getting done, and for all we know its because of this thread. The fact that Davis is fixing the job proves he's willing to correct his mistakes and protect his reputation. Nobody is going to bat 1000 forever, but its better he fixes it than let a bad job tarnish his record.

Consider CCA the Twitter of car audio, he vented and now he's getting results.
