about to buy, need last minute help!
hello all again...
i know you're all fed up with noobie posts asking stupid repeated questions. But because of time constraints, i don't have the flexibility to do all my researh ahead of time...i've done as much as i can, but need some clarification. some of you might remember my previous post about my purchase of MTX speakers....after visiting some stores and sampling the speakers, i've decided against the MTXs and returned them. I'm going with MB Quarts as that was the sound i liked best, even more so than the Infinity Kappas and JBL Power Series I'm planning on getting the MB Quarts Premium PCE 216 components for the front MB QUART - a Brand of MAXXSONICS - PCE 216 6.5" - ENGLISH and the MB Quarts Premium PCE 164 "add-a-woofer" speakers for the back. MB QUART - a Brand of MAXXSONICS - PCE 164 6.5" - ENGLISH i've decided to take advantage of the performance to include an amplifer to the mix. this is the amp i'm looking at, Eclipse EA4000 ECLIPSE by Fujitsu Ten any compatibility issues? Too little power? RMS rating? Ohms? Sensitivity? I plan on using 1 channel for each speaker... or should i step up and get the XA4000? ECLIPSE by Fujitsu Ten is that overkill? Too much power? I was reading up on Class A/B and D difference. Seems like the XA4000 is a better amp, but this is just for normal use, i won't be playing music at an obscenely loud volume...will the EA4000 be enough for my normal use? my other concern was that i wasn't able to find a definate answer on the RMS rating of the speakers...on the website it stated 60-130, does that mean 60RMS and Peak 130? All other sites specified each one individually so it was self intuitive and understandable. I may also consider dropping down to the REFERENCE series of the MB Quarts as i have read great reviews on those too. I can't seem to find too much of a difference between the Reference Series and Premium other than the Wet Power Coating. But the power rating on the Reference series is even higher than the Premium according to the website? Any opinions? THanx again in advance |
As for the RMS rating, I was having the same problem with my Polk components. I believe the saying 25-125rms (in my case) means that they can run at anywhere between 25-125, altho 25 is the least you would want, where as 125 it will still run great, but probably sound a helluva lot better. In your case I believe it is basically 60w+. Hehe I hope I am correct in this.

The XA4000 is a killer amazing amplifier. I highly recommend it. As far as the MB Quart speakers go......while they may sound good, warranty support for me as a dealer has been way below average. If you are still open to some options that come based on experience, also consider the Eclipse components as they are one truly outstanding speaker. Morel is another that should make the short list. MB Quart has been a great speaker of the year but with the recent sale of the MB Quart name from the previous owners (Rockford Fosgate) to the new owners (Maxxsonics), again the support for me to give to the end user is just not there. Warranty for me as a dealer is of prime importance, especially on speakers that must take all the abuse that the user throws at them.

I'd go with the XA amp, more power is better, be careful with the volume control. clipping kills speakers, and i don't think warranty should cover stupid. If i blow them from too much loud, that's not the manufacturer or retailers fault.
I have the MBQ RCE-216's running at 125 wrms, bi-amped and they're pretty good. |

i just realized that one of the sponsors of this site is 2 streets away from my work, so i'll maybe pop in there to sample the speakers. however, the reason why i wanted to go with MB is because they make the midbass speaker which i want for the rear and i like to try to keep the same brand as much as possible....its a weird tendency of mine... |
The NEW MBQ Reference series has a new part # RVF 216

Trying to compare a MB QUart of today to a MB Quart of yesteryear is no longer a fair comparison. I had the opportunity to listen to a old set of the 130KX speakers yesterday and they hands down cleaned house on any of the new offerings from Quart. Advancement in speaker design my butt, those old speakers from way back when you guys were still in diapers are still the shiznit.

i went and checked out some db drive stuff today...it was alright, but didn't quite blow me away...
i think i'll try to find a place to check out some eclipse stuff as well... but as for my original question.... would the EA4000 amp be sufficient to power the Premium MB Quart series? I spent all day at work today trying to find the actual RMS and can't seem to find it. I happened to come across the Polk Audio website and looked at one of their speakers which had; Recommended Amplifier Power 50-250w Power Handling (continuous) 125 w Power Handling (peak) 250 w this website was good because it gave a RMS rating... going back to the MB's 60-130w, would a 75W/channel amp be sufficient? or is that going towards too low to the bottom of the range? I like the XA4000, but its $$$ and not sure if its overkill for my application. I like the fact that it is a Class D, but since i'm only powering four simple speakers with no subs, i don't think the EA4000 should be a problem right? |
75 watts per channel should be enough for normal listening.
just make sure that your gains are set correctly, whether you install it or have it installed. if the amp goes into clipping, it will kill your speakers. imo, the eclipse amps seem like really nice stuff, but it bothers me a little that they only rate them at 14.4 volts on their site. at 12 volts, i think that the EA4000 might only put out 60 watts per channel, which should still be fine, but it may be something that you want to research before you plunk down your cash. |
