Adding speakers... will this work ? Or am I doomed from the get go ?
 

Ok, i'm lettin' you guys in on a little of my crazy lil' project here.

I have a 3-way passible setup up front to which I want to add a pair of mini-subs in the front doors.

3-way would be playing 125~150hz and up, mini-subs would be 55~60 to 125~150. And, the big ol' 12" subs would take care of the low bass.

Here's where it gets a little trickier. I have 2 X 200W for my passive 3-way, of which, the woofers have a 92.2db sensitivity rating, and a 100W RMS power handling. Now, the minisubs would have a dedicated 2 X 200W also, just for them, but, they have a 83.9db sensitivity rating, and a 160W RMS power handling.

Will the inneficiency of the mini-subs kill me on this project ?

Anyone ?

No it should not be a problem level matching. Just pad down the 3-ways as necessary.

Which mini subs? Tang Band? Which 3-way front stage are you running?

Make sure you address the proper mounting of those speakers and get as much of the output of them into the cabin as possible. If they are making the door and panel rattle, that is all sorts of energy that is being lost from the speaker in the form of sound. They are a tad on the low side but lots of subs are also that low as well. I would try it and see what the results are. You have a limited bandwidth to produce with them and a healthy amount of power for that band, I think that done properly, it will come out all right. Do you have a proper bandpass crossover for this task? If not definitely consider it.

I don't see the need for the mini-subs. Personally I would first try just splitting off the existing midbass and run them active, separate from the mid and tweet. I run my midbass from 60hz on up.

what the hell is a mini-sub? is this something new on the market? I've always referd to something like this as a mid-bass driver, or woofer. I'm not trying to be ignorant, this is just the first time I've heard this description of a speaker.


ps, I think it would help a system, provided it is set up according to your listening taste.

mini subs ARE mid-bass. But Mini-Subs Sell better!! Marketing 101.

Well, the way I see it, a midbass driver is used as midbass, and cannot reach 30hz and lower notes properly, a "mini-sub" as I've been referring to these, can go really low.

I've yet to see a dedicated midbass driver with 15mm of X-Max and FS of 38hz... Basicaly, this thing is built as a sub, but is only 6.5" in diameter. Hence, the name : "mini-sub". :P

you'll need to work a lot on your doors imo.
