This is my first post and I’m looking forward to hearing advice from the folks here.
Last month I bought a new Chevy Colorado (2018) and immediately made an appointment to upgrade its stereo system. What came with it was pretty disappointing. I don’t need to thump down the street, personally. But I enjoy a good sound stage and the truck runs quietly enough to enjoy it.
Anyway, we spec’d out Diamond Audio hex series speakers, Diamond amp/crossovers, and an Alpine ILX-107 head unit.
The head unit is where I’ve had some disenchantment. It’s a great unit; I’m not here to say anything bad about it. The thing is, despite the Maestro harness and such, I ended up losing a lot of Chevy-stuff simply because of the way things are so deeply integrated.
Here’s what I lost when moving to the aftermarket head:
-Trajectory on the rear camera
-On-Star turn by turn (I actually liked it)
-On Star diagnostics
-teen driver and several small features like that
What I gained with the Alpine:
-Slightly better graphics

I feel less comfortable overall with the various factory functions being gone even though none of them individually are all that important. The wireless CarPlay was desired, and it’s fine. But it takes a long time to sync, and it gets messed up just often enough that I’m not “in love” with it.

I’ve been told that I could get an “AudioControl LCQ-1” DSP and use that behind the factory head unit in order to keep most of the sound quality I’ve gained with the new amp and speakers, while getting back the factory features.

Im guessing that audio purests may cite a reduced quality? I’m mainly streaming from Spotify so I guess I’d have to ask how much of a hit in quality would I see?

I think I’d like to got back to the stock head unit but I’d really like to hear from folks who know about this stuff. Is it possible to use the factory + DSP to get things working well? Or should I just get used to life with the Alpine?
