Air Space
 

Hey guys.

I just got my first car, and I am looking at putting a sub in, but I have a few questions. I've searched, but I can't seem to find the answers.

I have a small trunk in my car (2009 Hyundai Accent 3dr) and I was looking at putting the sub inside the spare tire, just like other accent owners have done.

Its a great stealth install, and it keeps all your trunk space.

My question is, why is air space important?
My friend is selling his sub, and I've been told that the box does not have enough air space, but why does this matter? What harm could it do? Is the air pressure on the sub to great, that it could somehow damage it?

This is the sub my friend is selling. JL 12W0. The box is 14" 14" 11", which is "too small"?

I mean, alot of cars have the subs hanging from the roof of the trunk, in which case the "air space" is the whole trunk. So, does it really matter?

Second Question.

Is one 8" sub enough? It is a small car, and I would like it to be defiantly powerful, (the kind that you can notice) but I don't need pounding-trunk-lid levels.

In simple easy to understand terms.... too small a box and the subwoofer is nice and tight but lacks in depth of response. Too large and the box plays nice and deep but lacks any control (sounds like a wet fart). The box is more important that any part of a good subwoofer system. Yes a 8" in the proper box can deliver substantial amounts of bass response. So can a 12" though. It is all about the space you have and the choice of sub for that space.

No, you won't blow anything up - but you make choke a lot of the low frequency out of the sub if the box is too undersized.
My 2 cents is find the right sub for the enclosure size/space you have available and work from there, as opposed to buying a sub that's ill suited to your needs and compromising on the box size.

well this may not be an answer to your question, BUT... I Also have an accent 3 dr, but... it's a 2002... lol. I have 2 12" MTX and it pounds, and no trunk rattle... because... well use your head and think of hatchback. lol. the only thing that rattled was the licence plate. and that was easily fixed with dynomat licence plate kit. I'd sudjest going with whatever makes you happy, you'll always end up upgrading in the future anyway :)
