Alero trunk

I bought a sweet 4dr Alero and I'm putting either 2 12's or 3 10's in it. I don't care if I use 3 10's or 2 12's, but I do like this design. When I measured the trunk I wasn't getting anywhere until I found the only cardboard box I had to fit and see what it'd actually look like, it was also the maximum height/width that would allow for a slide-in box (15.5/30"), it fits snug into right where the seats fold down, so that was cool, I didn't really have to measure anything, it took me longer to find out that the vaccuum box I found was the *actual* measurements I'd be using lol. I can fit three of those boxes and slide it in as one from the outside, which would be (maximum or no-go) 15.5" high, 30" left-right, and 30-32" front-rear. I say 30-32 because I could probably give it a swift kick and it'd drop in, it is cardboard though and it probably bent a little. Either way it's 6.2-6.5 cuft internal if using 1" MDF, is this enough space (no port cal's) for 3 10's? Can you fit 3 10's all rear-fire with only 30" R-L to use? They are like 10.5, x 3, = 31.5, but since the max. height is 15.5", can you put 1 sub a little higher than the other 2, forming a triangle? like this..

O
O O I need to save 5 inches in diameter if I'm doing that.

with the seats unlocked they are at about 100-110 degrees and you sit *more* comfortably and with better posture.

I would also like to know if I port up into the cabin without the seats folded all the way down (not locked though), what'll that do? I probably could just rear-fire everything with 2 12's with a slide-in. I don't feel like building into the trunk, but it should look like this. Pro's to this are you have a big box, and you don't have to lose the back seats, also the port up into the cabin might do something extra. Opinions needed... I'm looking at SSA XCON's and a sundown 3000, and I won't be building anything for atleast 3 months. If you lock the seats in though, the subs would be touching the back of the car if they were moving a lot, 3-4" for woofer movement when it's in place. This box will slide in pretty easy and be too heavy to steal. I listen to rap only pretty much so if the 12's have a lower f/s or ability to get lower, I'll probably do that, I'd rather not go over 3000w I'm not made of money anymore.

i say 2 12s forward firing port forward or to the side that way u can still listen with the seats up or down... but its ur call

looks like a nice concept but if i would be your Bud I wouldnt sit in the rear seat if its not locked in... just giving a possible passenger point of view.

safety before sound. lol take the rear 6x9 out and get 2 6" ports and go through that instead

danyman 03-20-2009 09:44 PM

ohh and even with 3 10" or 2 12" you shouldnt need more than 5cubic ft with port unless its a special sub lol

Yup, 5.5 ported is probably all you need. Safety before sound for sure. Ensure that the seats latch.

There are three metal clips on the lowest part of the rear deck, I could throw flat straps around the seat but it would look a little ghetto. I've seen a pic not long ago of 2 aero's through the 6x9s, probably from someone here and it looked sweet. My biggest concearn is air flow, and how much of the trunk I should or shouldn't be taking up because I can either make a tall short box and vice versa, I'd have to. How big of deal is the box shape? It is better for a woofer to be on the smallest side of a rectangular box so that the airflow doesn't hit anything and bounce back while it's still got some force to it right?.. I have no idea but obviously you don't want a wall to be right at the end of the magnet, so do you do the opposite and get better results? It seems like if the port was pushing the seat out, the air would hit the ceiling and mess around near the back of the window, if it was through the 6x9's it would hit the slanted window and move most of the air forward. I really hate 6x9s and trunks that don't have outside hydraulic opening mechanisms. My last sub was a 05 XXX 12 in a small ported box.

Do you seal the 6x9 holes? Is there an actual difference in SPL or SQ porting into the cab? It does sound cool. If It'll be better just to face forward with port foreward with seats down, I'll do that. This port-up thing is what I'm wondering about.

I have an Alero as well, so I love where this thread is going. I haven't done anything as extreme as this, but I'm enjoying the read.

From personal experience, I love dropping the seats (and it makes an audible difference) but I'd leave them up if you were designing a box around whether the seats are up or down. I'm getting a lot of noise from the "hatch area" and generally around where the seats hook-up in general ... with it closed, you probably won't hear all that banging.

The Alero body itself is holding up, I haven't had any significant problems with lights, over the top trunk rattle or even bending side panels ...
But then again, I don't have 3 10's ...

The only other thing I'd warn are the measurements themselves. At least on the 2-Door Model, as you move in and inside the trunk, the shape of the trunk changes.
Height is smaller (plastic/metal in the way as the outline of the trunk) and the wheel-wells themselves. Just throwing that out there, because the measurements near the hatch are much larger (Height and width) as opposed to deep within the trunk.

Good luck with the build, take some pictures along the way ;)

I tried to space out six 12" subs with two old ones and it looks like they'll all fit in two sealed boxes with 7.8 cuft and maybe .5" between them all. Pretty dope.
