Alpine MRP-M1000 vs JL 1000/1

What type of difference would I experience switching from an Alpine MRP-M1000 to a JL Audio 1000/1 amp?

It would be powering a DD3512e sub in a ported box and I am using an eclipse AVN726e head unit.

I can get a pretty nice deal on the JL and it would only cost me an additional $150 - $200 after selling my amp to a friend.

IIRC the JL would put out 1000w at any impedance, the Alpine will only do it at 2 ohms.

They are both nice amps though.

would I notice any difference in sound quallity?

I doubt it, either or is good. Is that a Dual 4 Ohm sub? It can be wired to 2ohm nominal so both amps are good. If its anything else (like dual 2 or dual 1) you may have a problem drawing full power from the alpine.

JL Audio gets my vote.

These two amps should not be compared.

why should they not be compared, care to elaborate?

Point of information: Dual 1 can be wired in a series configuration to maintain a 2 ohm load at the amp.

I vote for the JL as well. Mostly for more headroom and a much better name.

it's a $1300 amp vs a $700 amp.

Same power from different voltages and different impedances.

Say you have a large bass note with the ALpine.
The voltage will drop quite a bit bringing the wattage down, and with box rise the impedance can VERY easily get up past 4 ohms.

Large bass note with the JL.
The voltage will drop with the power staying the same, and with the box rise
it will for the most part still get the same power.

The Alpine is CEA rated as 600watts @ 4ohms. They list the power output at 2ohms as 1000watts. You really are buying a 600watt amp though. Alpine does list a MAX power of 1900watts which is a decent amount of headroom.

Curiously I did not see any mention of CEA on JL's site but they list their amp as 1000watts from 1.5-4ohms. No MAX rating but JL should at least equal the Alpine in headroom, and you are buying a true 1000watt amp.

Traditionally Alpine has had regulated power supplies so the comment about a big bass note dropping the power output from the amp puzzles me but there is no specific mention of regulation in the online literature.

IMO, if you have a 2ohm load for the amp, the Alpine (at retail prices) seems like quite a value looking at specs alone. From an overall standpoint though, you should be comparing the JL to the PDX line. If you can get the JL for not much more than the MRP amp, I would.
